  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is Apple going to let Adobe get away with this

ahh, those were the days.

here's a bit more historical back-story on this:

In late '97 Apple (in their infinite wisdom) went from 6 PCI slots in the PowerMAC 9600 to only THREE PCI slots in the "new" beige Power Mac G3.

That meant that you had to buy a whole external PCI expansion chassis just as big as the G3 in order to plug in the cardset for Media Composer.

That pissed alot of us Avid dealers off. I know it pissed off Avid too.

I believe the next year is when Avid made the ill-fated attempt to cut MAC compatibility from the product line.

I have absolutely nothing against Apple - I actually really like OSX (and my i-pod)- but Apple has not always been friendly to high-end digital media "partners" or kept them at the top of their list. This is not a new trend.

Agreed...Those external chassis worked fine but were really annoying, especially when you upgraded to the new "G4" that had plenty of slots and you had these giant external chassis laying around. i still have spare gear from freakin 96' ugh.

It's a tough one because their research probably showed that only 1% needed the extra slots and those running a $150,000 system could afford the expansion!

In the nineties there used to be the joke on Apple:

Q: "What is the difference between Apple and a group of boy-scouts?"
A: "Boy-scouts are guided by adults"

I don't know if todays something is changed, but does somebody know if boy-scouts are still guided by adults?
:)

I am sorry, mdharrington, I was not clear. Yes, Premier is 32 bit per Channel internal color processing, also called Resolution independent and so is After Effects (AE7, if I remember correctly). The problem is finishing in 4K. Interestingly enough FCS doesn't do this nor does it get to 4096 (digital 4K) and it rides on the codecs and resolutions set for a project. Hence the native .R3D codec.

As for announcing before delivery, it seems to be an industry trend. RED was announced a whole year before the #6-25 were delivered. We have accepted it. In fact our current beef with Apple is that they HAVE NOT announced anything unlike Adobe on native .R3D support.

Adobe can finish in 4k, and will soon finish in 4k in .r3d (if you want)
Resolution independant refers to the size...or resolution...so 4.5k as well

I just don't see how Adobe has to catch up to Final Cut?
The r3d plugin will drop right into encore and burn to blu ray...

Avid stalwart

I am solely an editor, with no intrinsic interest in how images are captured, but I am excited by any of the data cameras, Red included. However, I am not going to jump around the toolbox chasing the bleeding edge (i.e., switching to Final Cut then switching to Premier). I'm far more creative when I don't have to think about the machine... so I'm happy to wait for Michael Phillips, et al, to figure out a workflow that's semi-rock solid. And I laugh when people here throw around numbers like 1 million copies of FCP sold... to whom? Here in the juggernaut of Hollywood, Avid still is where the the vast majority of my compatriots live. I'll let an in-house computer run overnight to process files into DNxHD format... like I wait for the lab to telecine. No big deal.
