  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is anyone scared that RED might "over saturate" the market?

What "red look"? It's raw without boring sharpening or noise reducer. You can make whatever look you want. Even change the DOF by windowing.

RED has a look?.... can someone show me this look?

I'm with you Sam... RAW is RAW, how can it have a look? You can sharpen it, blur it, saturate it, desaturate it, gamma left right up or down... make it look like anything and match anything... ? RED has a look... thats just drunk talk. :))

No, RED definitly has a look. a slightly grainy in the blacks but very sharp image, beautiful colors and gradients and high DR

RED does not expose linear light sensor raw, you have to start with with one of various iso settings which are curves RED has designed and redgamma or redlogfilm which are gamma "looks" they have designed. You start with one of those looks and can adjust from there or not. Fortunately raw means those looks are not baked in and there is more room to adjust from there than other cameras would allow. Now i doubt anyone would want to start with linear raw...

RED Does expose linear light sensor RAW, THEN you apply gammas and looks, which are very tweakable and can be done well or bad...

We're not at all worried about oversaturation. The $20K or so price point to have a Scarlet ready to go in the field plus the price of quality lenses (weather PL or Canon mount) are a far cry from the price point of a 5D plus a couple of kit lenses. Many willing to invest $20K+ are serious about capturing the best possible image possible regardless of the final delivery. The "magic" will come from Scarlet's dynamic range, HDRx and RAW output and yes it will "shine" on the silver screen, but it will also shine on 1080 delivery as well!

+1 to Carelton

If anything this will move us past the lubricious requests for 5D/DSLR projects...
In my opinion there are very few reasons left to even see a DSLR on a professional shoot unless it is taking photos/timelapse.
Low Budget: AF100/FS100 - Medium Budget - Scarlet-X/Red One/F3/C300 - Big Budget: Epic/Alexa/F65

2011 has brought many great professional video cameras and it's a beautiful thing.

easy answer to this thread - no way. Even at it's high res rate and "low" cost, the Scarlet, when compared to "complete" systems out there (like the new C300 and Sony F3) - that have longer lasting battery life, built in ND, and other built in features making them overall cheaper and easier to use - and with the fact that evey year Canon and Sony and Panasonic will be bringing out new cameras - the competition is high. I can see situations where renting Red (Epic) would be something I would want to do. For a personal camera, one that I truck around and do second unit stuff on or even one that I would shoot a micro-budget feature on, Red just doesn't seem practical to me at the moment. So, many folks will incorporate into the Red system and many wont. After watching Super 8 I am really turned on by Super 16mm film, once again.

I would say the fear is somewhat justified if you used to use avid for 200k and your cameras cost 200k plus film costs... the price of entry is so low now all us hacks are doing it:wink5: the union is the only thing keeping 4k iphones at bay as we speak!

The fact that anyone can get a Scarlet and hopefully everyone will is exactly what's good about it.

$10k is hardly a price point for a camera body alone that "anyone" can get. I am glad it isn't any cheaper though. I feel it's just right for what it is.

I still see a lot of people/producers asking for the 5D regardless of what camera nerds (whatever that is) think. However, I understand the concern and, parenthetically, it says a lot about the culture here that you are concerned that you might be flamed. The almost religious, fundamentalist devotion to a camera is unfortunate.

That said, it is a concern for me as well because I'm purchasing one not because I think, like many here, that it's the best camera in world history, but because it's what producers are asking for. If a Fischer-Price camera were what would get me hired I'd use that.

I remember when the 5d w/ 24p first became available, it was at the time, a God send to many filmmakers and something unique no-one had ever seen before. But today? A lot of camera nerds seem to gag at the sight of 5D and other DSLR footage from a mile away... it has over saturated the market in so many ways that I think just about everyone is looking for something else; something "unique" again. Just wondering if anyone fears the possibility of the "RED look" being abused and the Scarlet as the go-to camera for everything under the sun, infomercials, reality shows, corporate videos, every music video ever... I might be the only one, but I feel that the "magic" that is RED shines through on the big screen, in features / some shows etc. I'll probably get flamed for writing all of this, I'm just uneasy, that by the time I have saved up for my Scarlet (at about 9k right now, about 5 or so months to go:) that in some way RED won't be as special as it is now.

I know obviously that story and content is above all else, but I've always had a desire to get my first actual feature out on a unique format like RED, something just makes people still ask, "wow, what did you shoot this on?"

There is little doubt that everyone will have a Scarlet. My Assistant, his cousin, my gaffer, The producer, his sister, wife and girlfriend.

"oh we can use my scarlet for the job! don't need it. We are going to use the gaffer's sister's camera on this shoot, but do you have revolts and a side handle..."

just saying..
