  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is anyone familiar with Rokinon glass?

So what's the conclusion? Do they have so much breathing that we can't be trusted for decent film work?

Hi Vincent,
The conclusion is: very good lens for the price point, sharp and precise.
The the lens-breahing is a problem ...in some situations. Now you know, and you can use it to the best.

:-)

I watched the breathing video, its not as bad as you're making it out to be I think. Also you must realize that was the NON cine version of the lens, they might have slightly better characteristics with the cine version. All in all I think its VERY nice image - glass wise. So thats enough right there to be worth getting, and the breathing is there, but thats the photography still lens version and not the cine version. I saw other footage that hardly showed any breathing at all from the cine ones.

My Samyang / Rokinon 35 is the "Video" version with de-clicked ring for aperture.
Honestly, I haven't tried the "cine" version, but if the price point is the same, I think it's the same lens with metal ring for follow focus. if I'm wrong, that's good :-)
Soon, I will publish snapshots @ F.14 and f 2.0 (Venice is f 10 to f 22 )

I think the "video" version and the "cine" version are the same, no? The "cine" is de-clicked and has a raised focus ring. The only other difference I can see is that the markings are on the side rather than the top. I believe they are the same glass and same inner mechanics.

My only complaint about these lenses. The look whilst sharp, is clinical maybe some would say soulless?

But what can you expect for high speed lenses at this price. So if you want 'character" with these lenses then look else where. Having said that I have owned & used the range for sometime & intend to get the 24mm. Whilst I wouldn't shoot a fashion commercial with them I have other commercials that require a sharper image.

P.S. where else can you get F1.4 lenses for half or even a third of the price of Cannon L glass .

P.S.S Luca great shots post on the the other thread, all that sharp Samyang detail works well with the old buildings of Venice

Footnote: For those seeking a fast & sharp 50mm whilst waiting for a Samyang 50mm. I would recommend looking at the Pentax/ Takumar classic M42 50mm F1.4 awesome lens, tiny size & a even smaller price. available on ebay for about $120 or so dollars. Just make sure you WB before shooting with one, radioactive yellowed glass but a truly wonderful vintage piece of glass.

Don't you think it's the same for most modern lens? Zeiss , Canon ... For sure that's why i bought some vintage lens, leica , contax zeiss...
But if you have RAW, time ans skills you could transform the images after isn'it while the reverse is mor difficult. But off course, you could only simulate, will never be as organic as the lens you like the character

@ Mike

I once had a Super Takumar and tested it. Nice lens, and as long as I don't grind and inhale the stuff, I'm not that concerned about my health. But don't you think the radiation might damage your sensor over time?

The radiation is mainly emanating from the rear lens and hitting the sensor at close distance. Canon has a warning somewhere in the manual for the C300 that ionizing rays can damage CMOS.

To play it safe, I got me a Minolta Rokkor PG 50mm 1.4. Sharp as hell and no radiation or yellowing.

If you want something with even nicer bokeh, spend some more and hunt down a Rokkor 58mm 1.2 – sheer beauty.

You can attach these to the REDs via the Leica-M mount and a cheap adapter.

@ Uli

mmm.......never thought of that......& never heard of it.

I would imagine over long periods this could definitely be a problem over a short period ? Maybe someone from RED can comment. In the mean time caution ...thanks.

Thorium glass emits alpha and beta ratiation only. I'm pretty sure these particles are blocked by the IR/AA filters and will not reach the sensor.

Rokinon announced they are coming out with a 50mm T1.5 after the 85mm T1.5 is released. The 85mm is next month.

Rokinon doesn't make the lenses... Samyang does.

Samyang is Rokinon, Vivitar, Polaris, Bower, Walimex and a bunch of other names. Part of it depends on what country you're in. Rokinon in my area, and they put out Rokinon announcements.

That's rather incorrect. Samyang is Samyang. Rokinon and other companies are ones that re brand Samyang products for sale. They don't control manufacturing.
