  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is 24fps at 5K FF likely? I've become used to framing and using the full focal length of my lenses on the 5D in full frame. How likely is that to be a firmware upgrade?

A couple other questions:

-Is it true I won't be able to monitor audio?
-Are audio inputs 1/8"? That's what pictures make them look like rather than mini-xlr. I find it strange it's not listed on the tech specs
-Is SDI out cropped or downscaled? I saw a post here yesterday about that, but can't find it now.

First, to clear up some possible confusion. When you see 5K FF, that is not the same as a full frame sized sensor. ie 5D MK II. It simply means it is using the full frame of the sensor.

5K FF is 27.65mm x 14.58mm.
Full Frame sized sensor is 36mm x 24mm.

SDI output is scaled down.

This is Jim's response to a question about the possibility of 4.5k in the future. I think 4k is the MAX for the processing power of the camera. I doubt 24fps at 5k would be a future firmware upgrade.

On Scarlet? No. You are getting everything we can squeeze in that box for this price with the specs we posted. If you need 4.5K, but a used RED ONE or an EPIC.

Jim

Audio inputs are 1/8'". You can use this for XLR: Wooden Camera Audio Adapter

Not sure about audio monitoring or the SDI out.

On the Epic, there is audiomonitoring (headphones) and audio and metadata on SDI.

I cannot see how that should not be implemented on te Scarlet...

The SDI signal is scaled.

Others have answered you, but I think they weren't clear enough: Full frame the way you are using it would require a whole other camera, an upgrade to the Epic.

There is 0 probability you'll get that on Epic X, Epic M or Scarlet X.

The good news is that Red has said that they are working on a camera with a "Full Frame" 35mm sensor, like the 5D.

Now, if this is an important feature to you ... I suggest investigating the EOS 1X camera. Its a DSLR but its improved compared to the 5D and 7D et al.

I still think Epic/Scarlet are much smarter, but you will have to get used to the frame size and lens selections that go with using an S35 sensor - and you'll also have to learn to carry some wider lenses.

No. You can monitor audio.

Yes they are. There is an upcoming "Pro i/o" module that gives you multiple XLRs.

Someone mentioned the Wooden camera adapter.

You can also take a wireless hop from the mixer through 1/8" inputs.

Scaled. Its for on set monitoring, so it would be completely useless if it was a crop.

Fantastic. Thanks for the help. Full frame is less important to me than image clarity and dynamic range. I guess I'll always have the 5D.

1/8" on the camera is just plain silly. Regardless of the space it may save.

As Alexander said, the Pro I/O module will give you XLR inputs as well as other useful ports. Not having XLRs on the camera saves weight, and keeps the camera small. If you need pro i/o you can add on the module, and take it off when you just need to grab the camera and get some quick shots. I think it's a pretty cool idea :)
