Hi all,
I know there's been a ton discussed on the use of IR filters with Red, particularly with higher ND usage. I've been searching through a multitude of posts, but haven't gotten enough anecdotal advice on what's worked for others, and time is of the essence, so here we are...
Usually I put standard ND .3, .6, & .9 on my order and get a 1.2 and 1.5 IR+ND combo to save filter trays.
Somehow, I haven't yet tested/shot with a Hot Mirror or IRND combo in conjunction with a Polarizer, though I've seen some people say it's bad news. The question is, if that's a no-go, what would you recommend I do? About to go shoot a short narrative this weekend, all outdoors--mostly woods, but a major scene outside in an open field--and I know I'll likely want to use a polarizer for some extra pop in the sky, but will likely still want to knock down the light enough to get around a 4-5.6 on the lens.
Any suggestions? Was considering ditching the 1.5 IRND and going with a Hot Mirror for stacking, given that the pola would give me another 2 stops of light cut...
Wish I had time to properly test, but it simply isn't an option, hence the request for advice from the field.
Other possibly relevant info: shooting on Lomo Anamorphics, widest lens is a 35mm, and likely won't be used so often (but may be the primary lens used with the pola) so not so worried about off axis color fringing. Will possibly using a graduated ND as well to keep some sky detail on wides.
Budget is ultra low, so I need to be strategic about the filters I'm getting (i.e. no room to add a bunch of extras for good measure).
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Clint
