I was onto the Customs Info Line about bringing in the camera.

It's not straight forward because its not clear what the camera is.

Computer hardware 0%
Digital Cameras: 0%
Camera accessory 3.5%
Broadcast Camera 40% (dumping tax)
Lenses 6.7%


You could argue that it is a video camera, a computer, a digital camera but until the camera has been classified somewhere in Europe it seems like it is up to the guy at the port to decide depending on what kind of mood he's in on the day.

As the camera doesn't have a lens or a recorder attached the customs official, after consuting with a colleague, felt it was best classified as a camera accessory (3.5%)

That works out at €406 on the body (+21% VAT)
Import tax + VAT = €2907
VAT (of course)is reclaimable.

what, praytell, is a "dumping tax" of a whopping 40 percent. because to the regular joe (aka the customs guy) the Red is certainly a broadcast camera - I don't relish the idea of paying 6 grand or so in import taxes.

I got savagely beaten for 6 grand import costs - plus repeat charges on items that were not bundled on the first shipment (ie; I got charged twice - if you argue they just threaten not to deliver it)

6 grand? That's outrageous. Seems like a lot more than other people seem to have been paying. Are customs stricter here or something?

6 grand import costs is impossible. Are you including VAT in that? - the vat you can claim back if your are registered. It doesn't cost anything to register.

I'm an Irish American and have been dying to see some beautiful Irish footage from Red! Come'on guys, get cracking! Post some!

We have had our RedOne on about 5 field test shoots in the last month. Everything ranging from Green Screen to Crane shoots on running tracks. The first shoot was a short film which we are going to get to see the rushes off next week.

All of our clients have so far been instant converts to the camera. With no lab for neg processing here we get the feeling the RED is going to have a big impact in Ireland. It is giving people a realistic option to shoot with a 35mm scope where budgets might have prevented them in the past.
