  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IR on EPIC

I need to test further re: sharpness. At present I've only shot with average to soft glass, so I've really seen no benefit or detriment to sharpness... I can't believe its as simple as that though. More investigation to come now I'm back from foreign parts :)

I'd be curious how much more sharp the image is without it. Not for IR purposes, but for real world shooting. I'd also be interested to see aliasing and moire without the filter and whether there is any... I know the OLPF is the reason there is less apparent sharpness to the image while also protecting against moire and aliasing, just curious what the effects of the sensor are without the OLPF filter and how bad they really are.

Appreciate you doing the tests you've done. You have more balls than anyone I know lol :hurray:

It's pretty sharp without it.
Here is a 4K jpg of a chart I shot.
It has very minimal sharpening to it in post. Notice there really isn't much color aliasing even on a chart.
I'm making replacement IR cut filters to replace the OLPF/IR sandwich Red had in there .
I put subtle motion on the shot as well to aggravate any aliasing. So far so good.
I'll try it outdoors next, and compare to scarlet with stock filter. I'm afraid the compression will choke on all the detail.

And to think that DSLR people have to take apart the whole camera to remove it !

Thats good news Les! The more tests the better. I think that would be amazing if we could shoot without the OLPF and not worry about aliasing.

Jarred stated in the Monochrome thread that RED actually have and rent some IR specific Epics. They did them as a special request so I am sure if he said you can rent them from RED that would be a pretty darn good thing.
