  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IR 680 or IR 750 Which is better for Epic

I find that the Rosco Trucolor IR Filter is the best.

I need to buy a straight 4x5 IR filter to add to my regular ND's......which is better for Epic IR protection Tru-Cut IR 680 or Tru-Cut 750? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Rosco Trucolor does work well (at least with Red One M/MX, so should be OK with Epic), and is fine for owner operators - however the IR cut layer is deposited on one side (the side with the lettering), and not sandwiched between glass both sides, so is potentially less robust than other designs. Ie be careful cleaning it. It may therefore be less suitable for renting out. However, the non sandwiched design does make it cheaper.

According to Rosco, it doesn't matter which way round it's used.

According to my tests the IR contamination is well beyond 720nm (my point of reference for actual IR shooting), so either 680 or 750 is likely to 'get' the band of IR that passes the OLPF and causes the issue.

Don't know if this helps you or makes things more confusing, but there's some data of mine here: http://www.kippertie.com/red/spectrum/index.html

On Red One MX yes, it works flawlessly, but on Epic (at least on my Epic) it does little to nothing on a hot day. Schneider Platinum works fine, you just have to re-white balance. Then again we almost never get extreme heat in Montreal like you might in other places, and I personally almost never use tungsten lighting.

Red one MX and Epic MX are different OLPFs (and maybe even different sensors, at any rate the IR contamination behaves very visibly differently.

greg, check out post #5. ;)

Keith, very informative, thanks for that link.

Robert, thanks, I went with the Schneider......

When I hear statements like this, all I can think is every Epic must be different, because on my Epic, the Platinum Schneider IRNDs make the effects of IR polution exaggerated in a way that is not correctable in post. Desaturated image with crazy purple/brown shadows.

The Rosco works perfect on my Epic.

Sounds weird - heard they caused ghosting, but they should work for IR cut - I think they have to be facing the right way round to work though.

Eric, the platinum were designed to use with Alexa, the 1.8 and 2.1 with the Arry was the cleanest I ever work, but are absolute venom for the MX.
