Can someone please make a cable (iphone to lemo)...
Plug it into bottom of iphone and other end into red and be able to jam sync from an islate on iphone to the red.

Send me free cable for the idea

I know, I've had a lot of conversations with people about this on set. The only advantage the iphone would get you over a traditional slate is if you could have reliable timecode. Then it's worth considering. Otherwise, it's too small and when your battery goes....

Nothing beats a real timecode slate.

I already tried splicing my iphone usb connection together with a lemo... don't know why it has yet to work.

..I used electrical tape

Except a 200 dollar iPhone with a 50 dollar app and 100 dollar iPod to Lemo + Power cable, plus the extra 1000 bucks in your pocket you didn't spend on the real smart slate. :)
Peace,

Clearly sounds like no one understands the difference between Tri-Level Sync and why a smart slate is "smart".

If the Ipone LCD could reproduce 10 bit Colors for reference, 2500lumens screen brightness, and tri-level sync then I might consider it....

Till then I might as well use this ancient Smart Slate.

I'd change the Atomic Clock to IRIG:)

Plugging anything into the connector at the bottom of the iphone needs to be approved by Apple. You will need to be in the Made for ipod program and give money to Apple. If you dont do this they have all rights to sue for patent violation as the connector is covered by them.

Dane, your DITness shines through :)
Although Dane is technically correct... for some reason I would like to see a couple of iphones velcroed to the side of cameras running the ilockit app... would be cool for indie/low budget right?

dane- I dont need color bars for red. I can care less what colors are being represented on my RED during shooting (as long as im not set for day light when shooting tungsten)

fine.. whatever clock works.. im sure an app can support it.
also.. used a iphone slate for reference yesterday on a stage.. by camera (no light)
Iphone slate luminence was more than enough.. completely bright and easy to use..

Now.. Someone make a cable :)

how can apple sue for making a cable?
I own the iphone outright.. I can put hooks on it and make it a christmas ornament, Apple cant say shit about that.
so why can they freak out over me plugging a cable in.

Also.. just so im clear.. this isnt to replace a real slate... this is for times when you cant afford to have a timecode slate on set or just need something quick and on the fly...

Yeah you may be Right. but at the other end of that cable is a USB, which has no problems with apple.and this USB is capable of sending and receiving all the required info in to an adaptor cable with a fisher, limo or what ever connector you may want to go.

i have charged my iphone from my camera on set since i first received my camera.

Dane,

I think we're the only two on the forum who'd get the reference!

And I agree with you on all points.

Gustavo,

Having the USB on the other end is all well and good. The problem you run into is getting permission from Apple to access their protocols on the phone via that USB. Believe me when I say this. We have firsthand knowledge of this. Its not as easy as it may seem to work with the iphone when it comes to accessories that plug into that port. Apple wants full control over all of it.

Its not like I haven't used the iphone slate on-set I agree with you. I recognize Its a great tool especially when doing playback for a music videos or for owner/ops.

I'm sure whom ever can splice this little cable together would charge $1000 per cable which is the same price as a smart slate or lockit brand new:)

Zak....have you ever wondered why their are color chips on a smart slate? There is more to a slate then just a clapper and TC LCD.

Goodluck,

This is sort of the wrong philosophy though. Yes, RED is RAW and yes it basically just sees 5000K. However, all decisions you make about lighting, gelling, filtering, etc. all effect how that will translate and when trying to give post a good head start, I feel it's important to take color into consideration. Mixed lighting situations should always be looked at carefully so that there's no weirdness going on that might be hard to correct in post.

Having Macbeth charts, DSC Charts, G&D charts, and even the bars on the slate are all critical components to making sure that accurate color representation can be accomplished later on.

Especially on commercials, where color often needs to be spot on for products and such. You need to be able to deliver or else clients will be unhappy.

Color my world

Color my world

DSC Chroma Du Monde is my favorite, I love starting a color session by sampling it and then actually holding the physical chart under a full spectrum light next to the monitor for eye check. If they look reasonably close, I can continue with confidence. If, OTOH, the white point balanced chart on my calibrated screen looks significantly different than the hard copy version then I know I need to dig deeper.

It can save a bundle of time and make you very popular with the colorist and, if he/she is there for the grade, the DP.

Seeing that timecode is just a audio signal, couldn't you theoretically send that signal into the mic port ont he iphone and have the app read that...also couldn't it send out the timecode signal out of the headphone jack?

still a lot of work when you can just get a smart slate..

i know there are color chips on a smart slate.. Im just saying.. I dont need those color charts on my iphone slate.. I can have a separate color chip chart.. Like I said.. this isnt for IDEAL conditions.. its for the quick and dirty

Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but i've worked as a 2nd A.C. for over 10yrs.
The iphone slate would battle to make it through one day on a film set. The Deneke and Ambient timecode slates are built to take decent bumps and that is why they last for years.
It'd be funny to pull the iphone out for one shot, but only to make everyone giggle.
