So my iPhone 3Gs arrived today. Not only is this my first iPhone, it's my first smart phone. Normally, for me, the cell phone consists of me answering my phone and saying "Hello" or dialing and saying "Hello."

But I have to say, this iPhone 3Gs is a technological marvel. Wow.

It almost seems like alien technology. :yikes:

So what's the story with GPS?

You should look into a little ap called pocket universe. You'll find it especially useful Tom.

Yes, a thread with favorite cinematography - especially Red-related - and production apps would be terrific. Help us new-to-iPhone types separate the useful from the lame.

I'm off to try the ones suggested already.

These are all good, useful and production relevant:

iSlate, pocket clapper, iconvert, iTranslate, Where, Showtimes, Skype, Last FM, currency, Flashlight, Shazam.

Must say though, I love the totally pointless ones like iBeer.

BTW, you do NOT need a contract to buy the iPhone! But you'll have to pay full price for the phone.

Awesome suggestions, guys. Keep them coming.

Which app follows the sun's movement and times using the GPS?

I saw the new Doom game in the ap store for $9.99. Is that an online multiplayer game? Any multiplayer capabilities -- maybe iPhone to iPhone?

Focalware, it's like sunpath for your iphone, with the built in compass app "Clinometer" you can accurately predict sun and moon positions anywhere in the world at any time. I use it almost every scout.

Another useful free app is multi convert, it converts just about any measure or unit to anything.

Focalware is 10 bucks. You think it's pretty good, Evin? Before I get it, I wanted to make sure that Focalware is the best and most affordable for predicting sun and moon positions?

I got the free "iHeartRadio" app the other day. It's pretty awesome. You can tune in hundreds of radio stations from across the country, including many of your favorite local stations, right over the phone in 3G. I've actually been using the iPhone as a radio lately. Pretty cool.

When I was in Arizona this spring, I really got to love the ASU classical station, "KBAQ," and now, using the Public Radio Tuner app, I can listen to it any time with great digital quality sound!

I just got my 3Gs yesterday... Upgraded from a 4GB 1st-gen iPhone. Ah, it's nice to have the 3G, much better. The phone overall is a bit snappier. The new camera is fun to play with and I like the touch focus feature. I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality of the video mode. It's actually usable for quick little vids if I want to record something to show others later.

I'll check out Focalware... I was contemplating writing a camera app of my own, but there's already a hanful of options out there. I may still do it though.. Is there any sort of app you guys would find useful that isn't already addressed with others already available? I'm about to wrap up an iPhone application project in the next 10 days or so and wouldn't mind starting another.
