True, the word "metadata" is probably as overused as it is improperly used (both verbally and technically), but I've literally been dreaming the word for about 6 months as we prepare to unveil our foundation tools for new forms of metadata and target them specifically towards new users.

One of our tools, LiVE PLAY, a tool a lot of people already know about, is slated for release on the Apple iTunes store in January. But today's efforts were a bit too exciting not to share with the community.

I call this "the network choker."

Michael, this is going to be huge. Can't wait! Thanks.

All I see is a quicktime icon with a question mark in it...

Congratulations Michael.

This is really great news for the community, to have available a solution like this. Thanks for develop it and I know it's already been a success on many productions.

Any ideas about how much your planning on selling it on the Apple iTunes store in January. Might have to buy some more iPads!!!!

Steve

That is just awesome Michael... Have been really looking forward to this since you showed us an early glimpse of LiVE PLAY here!

Keep on trailblazing LIGHTIRON.

All the best,

Pure awesomeness. Interesting that you had 24 ipads, shot 24 clips i guess, one for each ipad, and then a 25th clip, which is the on you are sharing with us?

I really need to get an iPad, if only for Live Play! :001_cool:

fantastic - cant wait!

If it's going to be in the app store (which is great) can you comment on if/how we use it? Is it only available via Lightiron specific hardware/software combination or will general redusers be able to incorporate this in there on set workflow using a laptop and your software to control as a server etc? Really love this idea, just bought my iPad and can't wait to try this!

Frank,
Correct. I thought shooting a new clip and serving that on one iPad showed the speed of turn-around (it was shot seconds before being displayed). This test was to simulate 23 different people playing back 23 different takes at the same time. The takes are all from a single (daily) directory of clips which we all know can be in the neighborhood of 100 clips long by the end of a shoot day. This was also a test to demonstrate how many clips can be played on a single network prior to fully saturating it in effort to minimize the physical size of the network required on the set.

Mike, the major component of the system demonstrated in this video is the LiVE PLAY Server application. It's a very powerful application with the ability to catalog, organize, and seve the clips to multiple iPads (23 is our current inventory of iPads so that's as many as we could test) as well as capture custom metadata and create exports in the form of databases, PDFs, thumbnail galleries, and even online streaming files like as in the PIX System.
The list of recommended hardware components will be released with the software package in January so users can build their own system with Li-tested components.
This additional link shows a different configuration:
Below is an example of a single :60 clip that is played simultaneously on all 23 iPads. This simulates a take that has just been captured and every iPad user viewing the same clip at the same time. -Only each player has their own "offset" dictated by the moment in which the user chooses to hit "play," "pause," "or "scrub."
Furthermore, notice how I can go in, add some metadata tags to the clip (in the form of Performance notes in this case) and the LiVE PLAY Server saves and sends that information to all 22 other iPads in under 5 seconds. This allows the entire production to receive notes from a single person/department without any delay. And yes, a lot of the footage in this demo is Epic-which is so clean at the source it improves the fidelity of a hinted GOP, making iPads even more valuable as an immediate viewing device.

I am utterly stunned by this.

Now as an Indie, what are the startup costs to get this working from a MBP DIT setup, to, maybe 2 ipads?

This simulates a take that has just been captured and every iPad user viewing the same clip at the same time.

Hi Michael,

Just for clarification.. I can use Teradeck Cube to capture the file from the camera..and then with your Live Play have supercharged multi stream playback to the ipads?

Love what you are cooking up at LightIron,

thanks!
