Is it possible to use an ipad as a monitor? It would be great to use it as a director monitor. As well as to screenshot frames so we can use them as reference.

Any clever ideas on how to reference a shot while framing up a new one so that you can match eyeline / camera angle?

If you just want screenshots, take a look at the SmallHD 7xx series.

I'm looking to get the 702b. But how would I screenshot and save? Does the 702 have a feature to capture screens? How would I frame up if I'm using the monitor as my reference?

Yes the 702 does sceen shots. And it also allows you to overlay the screenshot onto the live image.

Be warned that the iPad is not very bright and breaks easily under the rigors of location shoots. Even with a flare shield around it, it's tough to see (particularly outdoors).

It's a shame this isn't easily possible.

The iPad Pro has a pretty consistent screen, P3 or sRGB depending on how the app is running (an app can run in sRGB or extended sRGB mode, most run in sRGB though)

I've even managed to use one as a sanity check reference as an extra monitor in Premiere Pro (running Duet software), it worked very well in terms of image and colour and matching other devices. I have profiled the display and also that of my phone properly.

This means that technically getting an image to it via the lightening connector can be fast enough, so if there was only some kind of HDMI/SDI -> Lightening convertor and we'd be good to go...

cheers
Paul

We have a new app launching next week that can do this (screen grab / compare) and much more. If you own a Cube, let me know and ill get you on the beta right now.
