  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

iPad 2 Resolution

That resolution seems squarish frame aspect wise.

Weird.

Well, that would be as a retina display.

Some of those details will be lost due to your eyes- or at least that's the intention.

So, it should be interesting, but I still prefer a 1080p or 2K 24" (or larger) display so I have a chance to see the issues residing in fine details.

As to the iPad2 having such a display- i'll believe that when I see it and not before. Its in the realm of possibility, but it would be a surprise if they had it ready by the projected April iPad2 release.

That said, I think its almost certain such a display will be in iPad3

Weird.

Its roughly the same shape as an iPad or an older 4:3 computer display.

For the record I think a design goal for these devices should be a display the size of A4 paper at 300dpi.

I seriously doubt this.

Their iTunes store doesn't even do video over 720p, as far as I am aware.

iPad uses a 4:3 aspect display, which makes a lot of sense for a tablet that is intended to rotate any direction.

More than one source that claims to have inside info on the new screen resolution are saying it has been doubled or is 2X the current resolution. 2X the current resolution would be 1448x1086, which would translate to a 1440x1080 screen. That's my vote, especially based on the GPU that is rumored to be powering the next iPad.

To jump all the way from 1024x768 to 2048x1536, is actually a 4X increase in resolution. I suppose it's possible, but I find it unlikely. That PowerVR GPU (which is roughly 2.5X as powerful as the current 535SGX) would be seriously stressed trying to run high performance games and graphics apps at that resolution.

There are rumors of two Power VRs and Two CPUs for the iPad 2. That's 5x the processor power of the current iPad, and even accounting for inefficiencies could reasonably deliver enough performance to push 4x the pixels as smoothly as iPad presently does.

I can't say that the rumors are true of course... but the rumor mill seems to be accounting for processing power and a lot of other details- again it strikes me as plausible and oddly consistent.

As to Tom Lowe's objection...

I think that they will gleefully keep selling 720p to display on these 9.7" devices. They'd just scale whatever they deliver for the screen resolution.

I do think that Netflix 1080p on PS3 has put some pressure on Apple to deliver higher resolution, so there may be some planning for the future.

Heck, they may even be aiming at 2K as their next step, passing right on by 1080p

It makes more sense to me that they would peg the iPad2 closer to 720p.

The thinking is that in order for all of the iPad apps you already have installed to look right the resolution needs to be quadrupled or nothing. That is what Apple did with the iPhone 4 retina display.
