Hi, I'd like to introduce a new wireless remote control solution for Nikon (G) lenses on Red...

Solution Overview:
• You get remote control of the aperture on Nikon lenses... finally! :)
• There are three components: lens mount with motor, receiver, transmitter
• The mount is connected to the receiver by a standard USB cable, for placement on/near your Red setup
• The receiver battery is easily rechargeable, including by the USB port on Red camera, and the battery is good for about 500 cycles
• The transmitter has a range of about 300+ ft, and like your car remote, requires a battery change once in a long while
• A new, high precision, fully integrated, stainless steel mount is available, being one of several operational versions that is possible with this solution
• Development of a smart Nikon mount is underway, and will be a low-cost upgrade

I've put up a website with all the info, and I hope it answers many of your questions:
http://www.aka-tonbo.com/NikonMount

Thanks!
Behram

would love to get one of these to RED to validate, sounds like a cool solution..

im sensing this might be spam.. lets give him till the morning to respond.

copy pasted from Q&A on his site

Q: What exactly does it allow you to do?
A: You can change the aperture in an imprecise way on all Nikon lenses, including the latest ones, simply by pressing a couple of buttons on a remote control. It allows you to very easily use some great new Nikon lenses.

that's what i really want something that controls the aperature in a inprecise way....

also...

Development of a smart Nikon mount is underway, and will be a low-cost upgrade

hmmmmmm

Sorry, not publically releasing details/pics of new integrated mount solution yet, for various reasons...

A new, high precision, fully integrated, stainless steel mount is available, being one of several operational versions that is possible with this solution

Q: What's the timing for getting more info?
A:
May 21st, '09 - RedUser.net Announcement
May 31st, '09 - Hopefully some people will be interested in getting this solution, and will contact me. I'll wait 1 week to 10 days to get some idea about level of interest then I'll post a detailed follow-up message at the end of May letting you know final pricing and production details - parts discounts will depend on real orders.

Sorry, I won't be able to contribute much more to the thread I started in-between. I'm way out of town/country this week and not online everyday. If there are specific questions etc., I'll try to post here in QA section for everyone's benefit.

just launched a new product...but will be out of the country for a while....

feel free to use credit card on my site though

how about a Vancouver phone number?

:)

the fax number seems to actually be canadian directory assistance.....and there is no business by that name listed at that address in vancouver...and no personel phone number listed to the name Behram Antia in the entire Vancouver area...

hate to say it but this seems to be a well planned scam....
somebody trollling the forums found it interesting the patience we had towards Viewfactor,Birger ect ect and thought they could make some money from it...looks like they did a fair bit of research as well.

It makes sense when we were quite willing to throw down large deposits for products unseen...including the red, and in some cases like viewfactor...paid in full for products unseen....making us very trusting.

So Behram, you have a chance to prove yourself by posting some real addresses and phone numbers on your site...otherwise we have to assume you are in Nigeria somewhere, Lagos maybe....

Re: Introducing... Wireless Remote Control for Nikon (G) Aperture

Hi again, well, let me address some of the issues that have already emerged.

> im sensing this might be spam.. lets give him till the morning to respond.

Hi Jarred, you don't know me yet, but it's not spam or a scam...

> that's what i really want something that controls the aperature in a inprecise way....

From the website:
Q: What exactly does it allow you to do?
A: You can change the aperture in an imprecise way on all Nikon lenses, including the latest ones, simply by pressing a couple of buttons on a remote control. It allows you to very easily use some great new Nikon lenses.
Q: Can you directly set the aperture to say, f5.6?
A: Not yet, version 2 will be calibrated (mechanically) to enable this, and will be a low-cost upgrade.

> aka-tonbo.com whois info/address etc.
> hate to say it but this seems to be a well planned scam....
> otherwise we have to assume you are in Nigeria somewhere, Lagos maybe....

Thanks for pointing out my lack of detailed contact info - it's now on the front page of the website. Regarding the domain I put the site on, I should have made it clearer this mount is unrelated to "aka-tonbo" or any other domain I happen to have. The domain registration doesn't use my home address/contact info -I'm reluctant to put it into public whois which is so badly abused...
I'm not in Nigeria or Lagos at the moment - in Singapore actually, equally well known as one the most unruly places on Earth ;)

Hopefully we can get past the personal skepticism, and onto discussing technology, if anyone is interested...

Thanks!
Behram

Hey I used to Live on Georgia Street in Vancouver :)

that address, if I remember correctly, is the Post Office, so I assume that means it is a post office box.

Hi Behram,

I think what would really kill off all speculation is if you could send an evaluation model over to RED. That would kill a couple of birds with one stone, the most important ones being: getting (hopefully) confirmation that the all-important warranty stays intact, and proof that the mount does indeed exist.

You have to get your mount certified by RED sooner or later anyway, otherwise there will be severely limited demand for it.

hi, my name is alex kuznetsov. i'm a co-developer of the red nikon mount.
the whole thing started with behram wanting to do an underwater eco-documentary. we started developing technologies that suited our finances, and at the same time became revolutionary in the film making.
a short history... before i started working with behram, i worked with CIS Vancouver, doing VFX for a number of films from the tropic thunder to the changeling. what i've realized after working for the CIS is that we should make film making more accesible to everyone. think about it this way... you spend $50-500+ for a nikon lense, and you don't have to spend $500-5000 for the red lense. it cuts down on your spendings and makes your post work easier, because you're able to attain same quality of picture for less.
by the way, talking about the imprecise control, what we mean, is 0.01mm accuracy. this is by far more precise than anyone can do by hand, unless thay are a genius... and there are very few of those. all i'm saying is that we've got a cheap solution that will make film making more accessible to more people, and we've invented it for ourselves with a hope that other people may adapt this simple, but money saving technology.
you want a confirmation that what we made is real, than order it. we depend on you as much as you depend on us. are you that scared of fraud? what was the last time you weren't able to cancel an internet transaction? we've got the payment options, all we want is to deliver technology that we did for ourselves to everyone else :)
i moved to victoria, bc from vancouver 2 weeks ago. behram is travelling in singapour now. i can be reached at 1-250-208-7198 at pretty much anytime. once behram comes back to vancouver, he'll post his phone number and you're welcome to ask us any questions you like over the email or over the phone.

thanks to everyone and we hope for a further discussion of more accessible film making. :)

wish you the best,
alex

the process is rather simple:
when introducing a new product its essential to:
- take a few good pics
- record a couple of how it works / how to use / install videos

both steps take mins - few hrs max (posted online bring you global exposure, saving numerous repetitive Q&A requests)

a great plus to the above steps is to send a product to RED directly for testing. If it passes and has value, it will only add to demand
(if sparing one to RED or some independent reputable party for a test isn't a possibility, it will raise concerns)

just a suggestion to get going smoothly and growing virally.
Community here is supportive and forgiving, but fair.

--

it is a way bumpier road, even if a product is A+, to come to a forum with no easily accessible / visible track record, no fairly expected proper display of a product, and ask for funds 1st before letting potential users even take a peak at the product.

canceling internet transactions is another story...

overall, there's been too many cases where even well packaged and displayed products in development didnt deliver on promises.
and there's more often than not a gap between when the product 1st comes out into the field with intentions and when its proven to work in the field to the best of its intentions over time
