  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the R3D FlareGuard for Epic & Scarlet

Since when does not saying something imply that it's tested and sanctioned?
So Deanan, would you please clarify ? Either it's Red approved or it's not... Right ? So should we wait for the official fix, or are we allowed to use this one in the meantime ?
I ususally like flares (including these ones) so I don't care that much, but I'm pretty sure there will be situations where I'll want to avoid them...

Thanks ! :001_smile:

As promised, here is a sample of the R3D FlareGiard in action. The following was shot on a Nikon 50mm G prime @ f/1.4, no mattebox. The light was a mini mole at full flood pointed at the camera about 10' away. Click on any of them for a larger version.

As for the warranty, a couple of weeks back I asked Red to verify this product to ensure that it wont void the warranty. Red elected not to test it. They did however do me the favor of taking a look at a draft of the installation instructions and made some suggestions. All of them I followed. The R3D FlareGuard Removable is the same design and concept as the Underdahl solution, but its made out of a much better and less reflective material I feel. I dont think there was ever an official declaration by Red for that solution either.

As I've posted before, we have been working on a thoroughly designed and tested solution.

Thanks Deanan. That was awhile back, so it's great to know you guys are still on it. Can you give us an estimated time of arrival?

I've had to fight the streak flare several times with my Epic, even with a Mattebox, and I would definitely prefer a RED-sanctioned solution.

And of course with more EPICs and Scarlets hitting the deck, there will be more people asking for it.

We have a field solution and a permanent solution soon to be released. Both at no charge... as you would expect from us.

BTW... R3D is a registered trademark of RED. And we need to protect our trademarks or they have no value. I guess this is a warning off the bow.

We do not recommend a flocking solution as it can shed into the low pass filter.

Ask yourself this, you created this brilliant company and then someone creates something not invited, how would you feel? Would you protect your baby? I would. It may be that the longer wait times amount to stringent testing and wadr, you came up with a quick viable solution which maybe isn't the best solution. Point being this; it's completely Mr. Jannard discretion as it's his intellectual and physical property along with Mr. Land's. So, friend of foe, choose wisely.

Friendly advise.

Paul,

While I appreciate your posts.

I think Jim can take care of himself.

We have all clearly read his statement.

This "lord of the flies" thing is getting spooky around here.

Nothing creepy at all, I am well versed in intellectual property and licensing, and you're right, he can more than take care of himself, pardon me if I am protective of a company I love, every day I wake up look at my gear and smile. Put your name on your own stuff, is that better. I have a right to an opinion and in my opinion the path this is going down, would be futile. That maybe would have been a better way to put it.

Paul,

You are abviously a bright person. We all really love RED, myself included. No one is challenging your right to an opinion.

I have found that people on Reduser circle around Jim and Jarred thinking that they somehow need protection. Have you seen the size of Jarred?

It's all good man. We love RED. Sometimes Reduser is an interesting social study.

FYI. If you look through my posts you will see that I am as guilty of it as anyone.

Yeah they grow them big in Red country. I know they don't need my help but sometime people ask the same questions over and over again... So then at times I feel the need to speak. I could not, but, well. Red is special I want it to remain special. Have a good night sir. See you around. Not coming at you hard, just trying to explain where I am coming from.
