  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interview with Ted @ CES today at 4 p.m. EST

I don't think the Engaget host really gets the technology haha. He seems a little out of it for a "tech guru."

And that adequately defines most of the Engadget staff. Cruel, but true.

Nice to see Ted and RED did make a CES appearance after all!!!

Ted needed a lot of Botox to keep that smile in place for so long... I'd have walked off on the second time the guy said "right, right" (and clearly showed he had been LEFT behind!)

very embarrassing... luckily most people would have been drooling over the equipment..

Ted says in the video that Toshiba is using REDRAY players and .RED footage to demo their 84" 4k TV at CES. I would love to see that. He also says they are in talks with all the major studios and all the big indie studios and there will be a "wide array" of content when they launch.

Ted also seems to say the projector has a separate light source which transmits the light with some sort of optical cable and that is how they are able to keep the size of the projector small. I guess that there's a separate box we haven't seen yet that is the light source for the projector. Not sure if this is just for the theater version or both.

Seems a lot of movies that were shot in 4k but DI in 2k are probably going to recomposite/DI in 4k. I'd imagine that that would keep the post houses busy for a few years. Also all the s35/imax/70mm movies will probably be redone in a 4k di, also keeping the post houses busy. Ted's always awesome, exciting stuff!

What I'm expecting to see is 4K masters with practical photography elements re-pulled at 4K but VFX uprezzed with an algorithm. Some high value titles might be able to justify the cost of having the VFX redone at 4K but I'm guessing the vast majority will simply fudge it. Will be interesting to see how that goes.

On a related note:
As it happens I shot a low budget feature about a year ago on my Epic that due to costs is only going to get 2K VFX elements. Their primary deliverable for the festival circuit will be a 2K DCP but they are willing to let me make a 4K version that I hope to put on Odemax. My plan is to uprez the VFX and see how well it cuts with the Epic footage - should be interesting...

Cheers - #19
