Thanks for posting Christopher.

It seems I am a disciple of his, but didn't know it until I read this piece.

He said,

"We know that art is about beauty, and therefore it has to be about truth."

What does that mean?

I think his underlying meaning was "We know you can learn, but can you think?"

Self financing! That's opposite to what all the producers tell us.
But I do like the idea.

Well Coppola has definitely lived and died by the sword on that one.

"The cinema language happened by experimentation – by people not knowing what to do."

Francis Ford Coppola>>>

Also with a great hope that some people have enough respect and understanding for experimentation ... I don't need to add more...

Interview with Francis Ford Coppola that includes his three rules for filmmaking, which are 1) Write and direct original screenplays, 2) make them with the most modern technology available, and 3) self-finance them.

He talks about experimentation and risk-taking, which I thought might be of particular interest in the RED community.

Great link, thanks Christopher!

Its not my fault...

You can get some else to pay the bills, and take your part, and when it fails because you did not do your job well of making it work you can blame other people or the press or the audience.

Or you can bear the risk, and maybe take the time to do your job well and have no one to blame but yourselif.

Doing you "own thing" does limit what you can do, and everyone knows that sometimes backed films do turn out to be worth going to, Inception (2010) is for sure something that Christopher Nolan could not have started out with, he worked his way up from Following (1998). But if he had not done Following (1998) there would probably not have been an Inception (2010).

Maybe sometimes there are people that deserve bame, but would Spartacus (1960) have been a "better" film if the young Stanley Kubrick had his way with it?

Well the self-financing got Coppola into a world of hurt several times in his life, but for his friend George Lucas, it made him a billionaire many times over.
