Hey Guys!

This year I am finishing my second year in Baltic Film and Media School, and I looking for internship during summer months. I have experience working with camera, lights, sound , editing units such as FCX. Have knowledge of English, Russian, Latvian and French a bit. Worked as AC on different projects - indented low budget features and music vid.

Currently My sister is in NY and I am going to stay with her in NY anyway. It would be nice if there was some internship possibilities in NY or somewhere else in US or Canada!

If you or your company wouldn't mind someone who knows stuff and is really passionate about it. PM or send me a email - I could send you my portfolio and CV>

Thanks Ermins Baltais

Hey Ermins,

sounds like you are in a good position to do an internship with your abilities. I hope you don't mind a little bit of advice from someone who has done quite a few internships with different companies at the beginning of his (still fresh) career.
If you want to successfully score an internship where you benefit and learn something, you need to change your approach !!!

Its great that you want to gain experience and that you are dedicated, however, I can almost guarantee you that NO company will get in touch with you...unless its owned by some creep with a DSLR who wants to exploit you with no pay for some low budget production of his....reputable companies don't work that way and don't have the time or interest to approaching people.

If you know you will be in NY or certain areas of the US & Canada...hop onto google...do your research and see which production companies are in the area you'll be staying at, put together a cover letter and CV package and approach them out of your own initiative....your success rate will most likely be much higher and more rewarding.

Great you're looking for an internship, but remember interns are very often taken advantage of. In most places, it's illegal to get an unpaid intern to do work a paid employee has the ability to do. You can be put in a situation where you are learning new skills, possibly assisting an employee, but if you're actually producing work as an intern, and you're not being paid, the law is being broken (in Canada at least).

Dominik makes a great point. Keep getting yourself out there, pound the pavement, and find a reputable place to intern. I disagree with Paul's point. You will (and should) work hard for very little and you will end up helping out the company some, that's how it goes. If you are learning things and creating relationships then don't sweat the process. Just keep a level head, don't let yourself be overly taken advantage of and stay safe.

I think Paul's point was more about putting an intern in a dark room by themselves and ask them to churn out 50 TVCs on their own rather than assisting, learning and doing things that have mutual benefit.

Maybe, but the brutal truth is that if one can't understand the difference between learning and NOT learning then maybe this highly competitive field is not right for them.
