Hey everyone --

We are shooting a small movie -- mostly in NYC, on RED.
Logistial question. I'm trying to shoot a couple shots - a few in Japan, and the others in London/Paris for this massive little movie. It's critical we go on location for these shots, and I would just need a camerman, myself and my actor out there.

It's been difficult finding DPs overseas, and check out days + insurance is killing us overseas financially.

My question is -- is there a camera that we might be able to intercut with that we should bring on the plane? EX1/HVX? How does that look? Has anyone faced this issue before... how? It's quite the production conundrum.

Thanks!
Dennis

Dennis, send me an email via the website in my sig, or PM me, I'm sure we can be of assistance to you for the Japan stuff :)

Cheers,

Paul

See this thread http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=20122. It references a video interview with the DP of 24 who took his RED on vacation all over the world.

He fit it all in a soft carry on (Think Tank Bag I believe). This included basic optics (he was using a Canon Mount). He had a special handle made for hand held work. Its all documented in the video.

but has anyone actually tried to intercut footage? i'm working off a tight budget...

I've intercut RED with EX1 footage. If you take care with the EX1 shots its possible to intercut, but obviously don't expect to get short DOF to match unless you use a 35mm adapter.

What else does not match: color depth, lens coloration/contrast, RAW format's ability to CC, resolution/details, dynamic range.

It all depends on what you are shooting - lighting in controlled interiors? available light exteriors? If you plan to intercut, test, test, test before you go and I think its possible. But that being said, I've shot almost nothing on our EX1's since I've gone RED. If I were you I'd rent or hire a RED operator over there.

One camera plus me or my staff as cameraman will cost you only ¥60,000 per day plus tax (5%). Insurance is already covered locally.

Cheaper than flying a camera and crew over from the US, that's for sure!

Hi Dennis,

If you want to use a UK based RED crew (or even hire and DIT) have a look at my website- perhaps we can help you out...
