  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

interesting RED Drive dropped frames moment

movement

movement

Today I had a hard time. The camera with RED-drive was hanging on a belt like a cablecar. The whole thing was moved quite smoothly by an electrical motor. As soon as it gained speed. The dropped frames came instantly and counted to a couple of hundreds after 30 sec. I had to spend time getting CF's. Why was it so sensitive I wonder or were there any electrical interactions?

What you are describing sounds like a problem caused by the phenomenom of precession. When a flywheel (the hard drive platters) is spinning fast, there is a physical tendency for the centrifugal assembly to resist motions in certain directions. These forces could cause a hard drive to vibrate while rotating and this can cause the read/write heads to actually touch down on the magnetic disk.

That is one of the reasons why Jim says "never use a hard drive in a helicopter" There are just too many rotational forces that the hard drive will encounter.

I previously reported a similar dropped frames failure of the Red Drive while shooting a lightning machine in a science museum.

The CF card is the answer; by the way, where heck are those 16GB cards???

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

I wish there was a scientific answer without any doubts.
Maybe next life...
