  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

interesting point of view of FCPX

It's the thing I've been saying the whole time... they don't have any interest in professionals and that's why I have always believed Avid and now Premiere is the best choice for professionals.
Not in terms of the NLE itself but because of Apple. Compare the support Adobe and Avid give their professionals. What Apple does compared to that is just a big joke.

EDIT: and don't forget Lightworks which is pretty much being developed together with beta-testers who is whoever wants to be one.

Have to agree.

It's interesting though since this approach has backfired. There is so much backlash from the Pros that the ProSumers have jumped on board. I talk to a lot of people doing corporates and wedding videos that have dismissed FCP X, arguably because of what they have read from Pros and want to jump on the bandwagon.

I tell them if I were them I would get FCP X and love it, it's perfect for them! What do they care about XML, OMF and the rest? Ingest your damn 5D footage and post on YouTube and make a DVD!

Funny that.

Except they can't make a DVD with menus..... hahaha

The biggest selling point to consumer and prosumer market for FCP is the PRO part. When you would buy FCP maybe you didn't need all the features, but it kept that dream of moving up to the pro level alive. The promarket gives FCP sex appeal that consumers will pay more money for the software. If Apple abandons the pro market, and the pros abandon FCPX, Apple is left with $300 for imovie. And $300 for imovie is at least $150 too much.

Pros and prosumers have a similar relationship to teenagers and pre-teens - one wants to be the other and follows suits with whatever. So yeah, obviously this backlash from pros is going to hurt them - even among prosumers.

A prosumer is nothing more then a consumer using professional gear. Look it up.

Yeah, I think Ron Brinkmann's a very bright guy, and his editorial is dead-on.

What puzzles me is why Apple feels they have to abandon the high-end market while embracing the $300 "prosumer" market. I'm perplexed as to why they couldn't have continued marketing FCP 7 for the rest of the year, while letting people try out FCPX for now.

After attending the LA FCP user group meeting on Tuesday, I came to the conclusion that this is going to be a huge opportunity for Avid to continue their crossgrade program and pick up a lot of ex-FCP users.

If this is true, it's a real pitty. I'm using Premiere for a try out and really want it to work. But it's not as responsive as FCP7 was. I guess I'll have to buy expensive cards to get it up to speed. But I was enjoying Prores editing on laptops without being tied to a tower. I hope Apple get more communicative and states their intentions for the pro market.

Actually, Christoffer, those of us who were around in the 80's and remember Alvin Toffler coining the phrase in his landmark book, The Third Wave, remember that it actually is a combination of the word "producer" and "consumer" in reference to a new economy where people would be both at the same time.

You didn't say where you "looked it up" but shall I guess at Wikipedia, the all-knowing oracle of the internet? :smile5: If so, they dance around the word "proactive consumer" and attribute it to Toffler, but quite honestly, despite having read all of Toffler's major works (many years ago), I don't recall his use of that term.

Despite all this, Toffler's definition has been somewhat co-opted but I'd challenge you in your rather smug suggestion that it is simply and clearly what you claim it to be. Maybe it's actually a professional using consumer gear, eh?
