  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interesting John C. Dvorak article on the decline of Sony

Which studio just used RED's EPIC cameras to shoot the soon to be released "Spiderman"?

Oh snap...

You make it sound like Sony Pictures has been shooting on F35s exclusively until the epic came out and they suddenly decided to throw the camera devision under the bus, If the director or dop of the amazing spiderman hadn't chosen to shoot red they probably would have gotten Arriflex cameras from Panavision and shot super 35.

I would say that once it was decided to shoot in 3D stereoscopic, their choices were a bit more limited (as in: no film).

I would also say that it is a bit premature and potentially foolhardy to count Sony out of the digital cinema camera game. The plans for the F65 are very, very Red-like, albeit with Sony's own approach. But that approach has already been revealed to include recording data on solid state cards, distributing a free transcoding application, and developing a hardware acceleration card for speeding up the transcodes. Sound familiar? ;-D

Yes, it will be a different form factor than Red's products, but they are already planning a T-block version to allow for more versatility in terms of rigging. Sony has been what some would call a sleeping giant for the last few years. They aren't sleeping any more. They are a very substantial company with a very substantial following, and a lot of people who trust them, just like a German company we all know. I for one have very little doubt that they will have a reasonably significant impact on the industry at some point in the next year or so. Whether that turns out to be a lasting impact only time and the products themselves will tell. And by this time next year, Red and Arri could have a fairly large lead that Sony will find difficult to overcome in what is essentially a very limited sized industry. But I would not be one to count them out. At least not yet.
