Um, probably any smart phone will take much better pictures.

A bit of deja-vu here.

What kicked off the development of the SI2K and likely the original RED, was an initial notion floated on dvinfo.net, to gutz out a 16mm Krasnogorsk K3 motion picture camera and replace the innards and mag with the new altasens sensor and off the shelf computer parts.

P+S Techink also engineered a digital back for ARRI SR 16mm cams.

This 8mm film emulator as described, may suffer more than the disadvantages of the interim 35mm solution for small chip video cameras, the groundglass adaptor. The groundglass in the 8mm device will apparently be stationary.

Even with a wax in glass sandwich solution like the "boss" screen as used in the fixed groundglass "movietube" device, there will likely be a fixed-pattern "grain" artifact and a resolution wall dictated by the five micron or so texture of the groundglass surface, which on an 8mm frame would be noticeable.

I think setting up as for a groundglass but shooting the aerial image may be a better solution but there may have been a whole new solution devised which could be exciting as it could well be adopted for plate-camera sized screens feeding a RED cam.
