  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

I was asleep for a minute there.

This is such a great development. True flexibility for a real professional's tool :)

Look forward to showcasing the options.

I know this is for the Dragon, but is it possible to make improvements to the MX through interchangeable OLPF? I mean, is it possible to even change the OLPF like this on the MX and is it possible to develop an improved OLPF for skin tones and highlights on the MX?

Olpf cleaning

Olpf cleaning

This is great news. We are coming closer to the choice we had with film stock.

I was just wondering how you would clean the Olpf? I'm about to shoot with a pinhole and dust/dirt just pop up like crazy when the Olpf is not 100% clean!

Shooting at 1.4 won't be a problem with some "dirt" on the Olpf but now we will get 3 surfaces to have a clean optical path.
Front Olpf, rear Olpf, sensor.

Wondering what is the proven efficient practice to clean these?

Pat

Yes. We cannot re-use an OLPF once pulled from a previously fixed formation, sorry.

Brent, one more small clarification needed. We send in for the kit to adapt to interchangeable OLPFs. Then we send back the current OLPF and get credit back that makes the kit free. But when we get the kit, do we also get an OLPF of the interchangeable type?... orrrrrr, are we left with a camera that can accept interchangeable OLPFs, but with no actual OLPF?

+1 on this. I would like a RED video with best practices. I think having a standard will become important, not just for myself, but for others who may be using or renting my gear. Something which I can make a requirement to view prior to rental and bake something into the rental agreement, in large letters, about following.

Maybe throw in some Nate Heartt tomfoolery into the production values....

I am thinking this option is not going to be available for Epic? This may be the most compelling argument yet to upgrade to Dragon.

How about make a sensor and/or OLPF that is good enough to work in any situation? Am I the only one that thinks this is a cop-out? Does each one come with its own special highlight smear and aberrations?

Every camera manufacturer deals with this dilemma. There is always a compromise with whatever one you choose. Red is giving you a choice. Red also believes the one for everything is the new OLPF.

If you are not able to send to a service center, contact dragonupgrade@red.com to get a modification kit sent to you for $100. Need to send back your old OLPF to get a credit of $100 to net free modification.

Thank you for giving us the ability to do that, I just learned last week that it's "illegal" to ship cameras from where I live!

Hi Brent, can I wait until the "Dragon Standard" OLPF comes out and then send in my recently upgraded Epic (with the "Skin Tone - Highlight" OLFP) and have it only come back with the Dragon Standard flavor?Very cool stuff. Thanks to everyone at Red. So badass.

Yup.

would love to try the underwater one. we are diving channel islands early next week if you have any UW ones on hand would like me to shoot side by side comparisons against the regular olpf while we are out there.

Underwater in development, not gonna be a matter of days, sorry.

Just one thing.

This is is just one more way RED supports it's customers and cinematography in general by putting image control and choices in the hands of cinematographers.

There will be detractors, but I believe that what's at the heart of this is giving us all the opportunity to make fantastic images and choices based on our shooting styles and situations.

all for what, 200 bucks?

Thanks RED.

We are a professional camera company. We believe in empowering the shooter to choose what works best for them by giving them options. Between a modular system with accessories and modules, sensor upgrades, different lens mount options, OLPF options - the freedom of choice is a good thing.

The kit includes the version of OLPF you want to have in your camera after mod. One for one swap. Fixed for swappable.

AMEN!

First, props for getting the swappable era going so quickly - WOW.

Second, if I wanted to shoot with no OLPF for a particular look/effect, would there be any issues with critical focus if there was air instead of glass in that portion of the optical path?

Cheers - #19
