The biggest problem with Skull Trail is the memory subsystem.
The board is only going to give half the memory performance of most bigger workstation and server class i5400 based boards. With only 4 RAM sockets and utilizing only two of the four available memory channels, that was really a bone-head move on Intel's part.
In operations that are more heavily dependent on memory bandwidth than RAW CPU performance, Skull Trail is going to come up short against cheaper gaming boards that can use dual-channel DDR3 and i5400 based mainboards that have full quad-channel implementations.
The system from Silverado may not be from Boxx... Either way, it's not like I can go out and buy a Skull Trail motherboard right now. So it's a little odd for them to be offering one up for lease.
In our extensive testing of this new intel platform, we see virtually no difference in memory performance when tested against standard quad-channel Xeon systems such as our 3DBOXX 8400 workstations and MAC Pro's.
I have to wonder if Silverado actually has one and if they do if they can actually lease / rent it out.![]()
