Hey guys, just giving you the heads up on the Core i7 release today. Newegg and Tigerdirect have the new Core i7 stuff in stock with 3.2ghz being the top quad core processor. They're supposed to be quad cores with Hyperthreading, as far as I know so far, so don't automatically think they're true 8-cores, they're just better geared towards multitasking and applications such as video editing.

Also, new Xeons based on Nehalem will be released 1Q 2009, again with 3.2ghz being the top speed quad core model. Guess we should also be on the lookout for an Apple Mac Pro refresh around that time.

Around 25% faster than Core 2 for a given clock speed.

Anyone want to buy a PC and bench RedCine? I can't believe you can put together a whole system for just over $1000... Anandtech has overclocked the cheapest $300 i7 chip to over 4ghz. Now add in the 25% speed increase and you get equiv speed to a 6ghz Core 2 quad.

That means your $1500 PC just might beat a $3500 8-core 3.0ghz Mac Pro at the moment.

Apple always updates in Jan so I would definitely wait if I were in the market for Macs...

Here we go... :)

I'm expecting new Mac Pros at MacWorld in January.... Could be wrong, but seems the most likely.

Definitely! 100% agree.

Only question is when Apple puts these in a quad-core laptop - it's supposed to be 2nd half next year (waiting for a new chipset or something) which kinda sucks. Because the 32nm die shrink is coming soon after that.

So I'm unsure whether to plan to buy a laptop near the end of 2009 or wait until early 2010 when they might have a more energy-efficient one.

Haven't bought a laptop since 1998. Excited.

Anyway, I think that we've come to a point, matter of fact, been there for a while, where properly integrated PC's will always be faster than MAC's, and yes, at half the price...but then, if you need to have those shiny, brushed aluminum cases and the cool looking user interface and the programs that might be better than their Windows counterparts but really aren't, hey, wait until next year!

We have been working with several PC makers since the early hardware beta of Nehalem on R3D performance in SCRATCH and REDCINE.

For very high-performance applications, the single-chip Nehalem units still need a few months to "settle down."

The technology is indeed very exciting and promises some huge leaps - especially when combined with the 5800 (4G!!) and CUDA. But stability and speed will not be immediate.

Best,

Lucas
