  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Instead of "filming", what word to use ?

We use quite a large number of words in English language that have divorced themselves from their original meaning. So, "filming" means a particular form of capturing, recording, archiving the Time, Space, Objects and People. You don't CAPTURE the motion images, you PROJECT frames that when played in succession create an illusion of a motion. That is why the word filming is good. And cannot be replaced by digital-ing, because digital is an antonym to analogue, not to film. You may say, 'carding', since you capture onto a card. Or 'harddisking' if you record directly onto a disk, but that again sounds moronic. So, because film is the heart and soul of cinema, its primordial medium, as it were, it is also sort of respectful to use the word filming to create a..film..right? Imagine you change the word, and then you have to submit your...erm..film? To a .short..erm..film festival? You see, it gets ugly. Film and filming for me. You can either do, shoot, etc. Also, in film theory we say shot-by-shot analysis, and I'm not American, so, it is all good, I think. You can shoot film or shoot digital, but you are filming, and/or shooting a short, a feature, a doc, an experimental film and so on.

My job involves a lot of shooting without knowing what the final delivery will be. The term "Cinephotographer" sums up my job perfectly. I may shoot cinematic pieces but after shooting, the large resolution stills from the EPIC are pulled from the stream of motion pictures.

When I'm going out to work, I still say "filming" or "taking pictures". As previously mentioned, "filming" has wider meaning than just shooting with film. Even photographers who shoot with 35mm film go "photograph" something. Not "film" something. "Film" means "motion picture" according to the dictionary. I guess shooting digital still pertains to the word "film"...

This is where you're wrong. You cannot pull the stills from the motion pictures. You can only pull the frames out of your card, or disk. They are recorded as frames, and are transferred as frames. That is why your cam captures xyz number of FRAMES per second.
