  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Insane flash sale from B&H on SmallHD 2403

The joke is that the 24" SMHD monitor has been at that price for the last two months on the B&H site. On Jan 1st it went up back to $3,500 and now they call it a flash sale.
Like no one noticed that. Haha.

I haven't used the 24" HDR and only used the 17" HDR right after it was released, but the 17" was so bad when viewed sightly off axis that I'd be hesitant to try the 24". Anybody with real world use experience have any input regarding the off axis viewing?

I am in agreement with Kyle, I own the 17" HDR and it has been a zero confidence monitor of me. Off axis viewing is a real issue, I am constantly reminding clients to view straight on. I have even purchased their new color probe to help with color calibration issues and it has made my monitor calibration issue even worse. I regret this purchase, (both monitor and probe). While the 17"HDR has underperformed for me, I also own the 702 bright and have had a completely different experience. It has been rock solid and a dependable monitor on set.

I've tested out the 24" non-HDR, and it seemed pretty good - hit the advertised 3000:1 contrast ratio at studio/minimum brightness. The 17" HDR only hits 600:1, which is pretty terrible. If the 24" HDR is basically a high-bright version of the 24" studio, this seems pretty great for the price. But I don't think it's quite "HDR" as it only really hits Rec.709, and the black level at full brightness isn't really low enough. But probably decent for use on set. Not entirely sure about off-axis, but the 24" is definitely a different monster than the 17", so I wouldn't paint it with the same brush.

I upgraded mine to the p3x panel, and i am completely happy with it now.

The viewing angle is great now, and the images look better in every way.

Good to know Tom. Curious if the p3x has a fan that is fairly audible? Recently on a set I noticed one of the larger SmallHDs (could have been 17" but was likely a 24") was surprisingly loud, presumably from its built-in fan. If so, do you know if the fan's settings are adjustable to lower its power or turn it off? Thanks, Mark

So that's an interesting subject.

When my monitor was first purchased, and still the standard hdr version it had an option to turn the fan on or off in the settings, then with a later firmware update the option disappeared, and the fan did not run.

I emailed smallhd as I was concerned about the monitor overheating, but assumed that maybe the fan only turned on now if it needed to.

They responded that the fan actually didn't seem to make any difference so they had disabled it.

I don't know if this holds true for the larger monitors, but for mine it has not been an issue, and my monitor is completely silent.

Good info thanks Tom!
