Hi,

I purchased a RED One MX two years ago and have been slowly building my rig. I just recently purchased two 18mm rods from RED, but my original package came with the Element Technica cheese plate/ handle combo with the 15mm brackets; I was usually attaching my drive to the cheese plate with a velcro/tape combo (little squares with tape on one side and velcro on the other). I'm looking to replace the 15mm brackets with the 19mm ones, so I can't use the cheese plate anymore, which makes me sad. I already have the RED Quickplate for my RED Bricks, but now, I have nowhere to place the HDD because the cheese plate is no longer in use.

I was thinking about selling the Quickplate for $250 in order to put some funds toward the RED Cradle. Are there any other options than the cradle? My rig keeps changing as I upgrade; it can be really confusing sometimes for me, so thank you for having patience with me and taking the time to read my thread.

my advice is .. buy an ssd module .. the red drive cables go bad pretty quick in my experience .. were (are they still available in the store..the hdds are not..)/are.. pretty expensive ..so i would suggest bodging something together .. perhaps buy some universal mounts and rig it underneath the rods with Velcro .. but i wouldn't invest too much in red hdds if you can avoid it .. the hdd unit will die sooner rather than later (and since it is a striped raid.. its twice as likely to fail as a regular single drive)

Here's what I'd do:

- Get an Element Technica Red Drive isolator (Makes mount/dismount easy, protects from dropped frames)
- Buy used SSDs from reputable Redusers (discounts galore these days on the older style SSDs)
- Use the Red Drive as a backup (you get low on media or if you need long recording times)

SSD makes the Red One a completely different camera. I would avoid the RED drive cradle. In my opinion, that was not the greatest thing to accessorize the camera. Bulky and bad ergonomics. Way better options out there.

Actually the Element Technica Top Cheeseplate for the Red One can be used with the Red 19mm top rod mounts

I had no idea! That's awesome! That really makes my day.

There's a guy on the form who makes the 7 Jib who also made an isolation plate for the R1. Works great and have never had a drop frame issue with my R1 on my shoulder. The drives are heavy though. The cradle is fine if you shooting locked down.
