So I'll come out with it straight: I unplugged my external drive today before safely dismounting it; result is of course messed up drive and now I need to recover my stuff (no don't worry not a bunch of footage for some important shoot...actually all old stuff). So the question is, anyone know of any FREE (note, that's free) software I can use? I'm not about to spent 100$ on software I'm going to use this once for something so stupid. I'm a cheapskate.

I should also add that I used the Stellar Pheonix demo and successfully scanned everything fine...I just can't recover them unless I buy the product.

Well you should consider having some recovery software as part of your kit just because this won't be the last time it happens.

It's never fun to lose data, at least you don't have to panick when it happens.

Check out SpinRight (google - Spelling could be weird). I've never tried it myself, but I know people who have used it to great success. The only thing is the drive must be installed internally in a PC, and it takes a while (hours->days->weeks in some cases) because it tries to scan a bad sector in something like a thousand different ways before it gives up and moves on, so it's a fairly high probability that it can recover the data. I've heard some data-loss horror stories that it was able to remedy...
