I am now changed the schedule. Starting from October, every date that was the 10th has now become "by the end of the month". We need this extra time to get several things right. I do not want to disappoint anyone, but I would rather delay shipping than to push cameras out the door when we can improve them. We need the time.
Jim

Jim - give us a bit more detailled idea - so if you write "at the end of the month" - is it better for us to delay it to 4 weeks? I know this is pretty difficult - but we should know if you already added some "headroom". Otherwise we have to ad some "headroom" on the schedule.
we have to plan and to communicate it to our customers.

We all understand Jim, my question is of the 200 cameras that are supposed to ship in October, are they all going to be available the same day or are you going to release them as they become ready?

Fair questions, no doubt. We'd also like to know.

Emanuel already posted his own opinion. But there are more people involved in his back.

Whats the hurry?
Why not let the first 50 shoot for a few more months to reveal all the bugs and also provide more + and - feedback than we have ever seen before in the development of a pro electronic camera?

If any hardware isues develop that require cameras being returned to be fixed the smaller the number the better.

Considering the size of the RED team at the moment at least, it is easier to repace 50 dodgy cooling fans than 500.

Also some tech/subjective issues may not present themselves until film out which we have seen none of so far.

Sony won't have 4k until late 2009 and 2k late 2008 recording DPX (so the rumour goes) so you have the time if RED users have the patience.

RED has a unique opportunity to refine the camera quickly because of the instant and public feedback from RED users.

This oportunity will be squandered if RED doesn't wait longer for feedback from the first 50.

The more REDs that are shipped before the issues with the first 50 are found and adressed with the first 50 the more difficult and expensive it will be to impove the hardware.

Who's saying it? You did.

Please, have a better reading on our post:

By the time my camera ships it's gonna be so sweet... thanks early adopters... :)

No problem here. I prefer cables that work. :)

No problem about the delay!

Question: I can't seem to find the "schedule" that everyone is refering to.
Is it up on red.com or can it be found here on reduser.net?

Thanks in advance!
Hi Marcus, here's the last schedule Jim posted, so if you take all those 10th dates and make them "end of...." you've got the new schedule:

Thanks for the update Jim, take the time you need to get it up to your standards. Three weeks isn't going to kill anyone I suspect, unless they didn't heed your advice about not booking firm commitments based on tentative shipping dates.... :)

Personally I am glad as the accessories are just as important to me as the camera itself.

I really need that EVF, REDDrive, etc. While I like flash, my work requires a lot of "longer takes" and I shoot outside so the EVF is a must.

sleep? RED gives you wings

:P

heh heh i think its in Deanan's contract that hes only allowed to sleep 2 hours a night.

Jim on the other hand... i think he just decided some time ago that sleep was a waste of time

... thanks early adopters... :)

Us early adopters are putting our cameras through a wide variety real world shooting scenarios - and overall the results I've seen with the other early adopter cameras, and the results that I've experienced with #8, are stunningly good for sure!

To see a camera of this quality, with these features, developed in a time frame like that, is astounding to me - not that I ever doubted that RED Team would pull it off. These guys are challenge oriented and they're committed to rising to every challenge that presents itself. That tenacity has allowed them to succeed.

I have been 110% stoked with the images generated by RED #8 so far - amazing stuff! The only hiccup I've experienced so far has been the reported problem with the LCD cable, RED has gone out of their way to solve that for me, and its not an issue now. I/we have put #8 through extensive 3D testing, mobile single camera EFP shoots in the natural environment, water housing testing, mount change to Birger Canon and back to PL, and many other real world shooting situations I haven’t reported publicly. I/we have found the build quality of RED One to be excellent, including the lenses and accessories.

The customer service by RED has been exceptionally good - in my 30+ years in the photography, television, and film industries I've never received customer service that even approaches what I've experienced with RED. They have a small team, but these guys bust their asses to step up and answer questions, offer solutions, and refine their product.

I'm waiting for my second RED One camera with the rest of you. My #700 was due on November 10, but now will be at the end of November. But the field use of #8 and the other early cameras is helping to refine the already excellent RED One camera system - and your cameras and my #700 will be better because of it.

Those of us who reserved cameras early are real fortunate to be the "beta testers" if you will, and in the process we're generating some awesome 4k images, giving feedback to RED on our experiences in the field/on the set, finding the normal small problems like the LCD cable quirks, and essentially teaming up with RED Team to finish the polishing of this diamond that is RED One. When you do get your cameras, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that the cameras were refined by the beta testing/field testing input of us early adopters. We're happy to do it for you, RED Team, and ourselves - in that sense, it's definitely a "win, win, win" situation - the best kind.

Mike I think you have made some very valid points, personally I live too far away to have to return a camera for repairs so I agree, Red should take the time to fix bugs so we don't have to stick Red stickers on HVX's (brilliant piece of work though)

4100 cameras by May 31st.

There must be some exectives jumping out windows in Asia.

Time to buy more stock in the CF guys!

Too bad LEMO is a private company!

I have a two year old son (Sebastian). Watching him develop is the most amazing thing I have ever experienced in my 40 years on this planet. I remember his "infancy". When I look back now and play those memories in my mind I can only think of one adjective that almost does it justice -

Magical.

Infancy = Magical.

Keep up all the amazing work Jim & company!

The whole gang at Offhollywood is so very proud of our two new babies ... we are pretty damn sure they will grow up to do amazing things.

Cheers from Martha's Vinyard - shooting in a few hours -

We appreciate everyone's support. But please allow us to stumble along our path to becoming the company you wish we were.

Jim,

my support for RED is unconditional, allowing you to stumble is no problem, the problem is that I do not think you stumble, I think you are more likely to be Jumping and Crushing and you surely already are the company I wish you were.

My camera were scheduled for november/december 10th, but I all ways considered them to be ready for the best Christmas of my life, so no disappointment here.

"JIM it is not the achievement that will give the most pleasure and satisfaction, but it is the Journey getting there, that will fulfill our Visionary Spirit and Heart. I believe truly, as tis is true for me so it must be true for you.

Thanks again Jim for your dedication to this project and your unmatched relation you have substained with all of in this Fantastic forum (FAMILY).

Ciao,

Jim,

Thanks for the update. What's a couple of more weeks, you're already years ahead of everybody else. Very few people in this business seem to care this much about getting it right. I can wait. Thanks to you and the team for the Herculean effort.

Keep up all the amazing work Jim & company!

Having a two year old and six-month old, this makes so much sense.

This is an amazing process to be privy to, just like watching a child develop.

Only, you can't shoot 4k images with a child. :)

Jim, et al....keep up the great work and as usual THANKS SO MUCH for all the openess.

J.

Hey Jim,

Even though I haven't put down the $ for a reservation (boy am I tempted!), I feel like I owe you money. I've learned so much about successful approaches to starting and running a business because of the openness with RED's launch. And I've learned so much about many other things from the people who helped make RED possible.

To Jim, who made this happen. Thank you. To those who are creating this revolution, Thank you. To those who believed and took a very public leap of faith. Thank you. To those who share their knowledge so openly and so willingly. Thank you.

You are my heroes. Seriously.

Gratefully,

Dillon
