  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

(In search for) Specs, pricing & surprize

I am like many of you, realizing the dependency we have generated over the years on the Japanese to create a camcorder we all want and own.
I am stunned that we all are now waiting for the price of the Scarlet, supposedly an American invention, to be determined by the availability of Japanese parts. I would dump my Sony Camcorder in a minute for an American Camera invented and made in America that actually worked. And I mean made in America, not researched and conceived and tested in America and then shipped off shore for low cost labor to crunch out the parts and assemble the bits so the margin is nicely padded. American Pride is such a hollow phrase these days. I wish and hope that it will apply to the Scarlet
with the original feeling it used to generate.

I think you would be hard pressed to find any complex consumer good completely made in one place any more. There is not just Made in the USA, or Made in Japan, or Made in China anymore (unless you are talking about simple goods.)

Yes, I too would like it if the Scarlet was 100% made in the US, but that is just not reality. It is mostly made here and to me that is better than any other camera (That I can afford) on the market.

If I am not mistaken Jim held out with Oakley Footwear as long reasonablly possible to be manufactured in the US. At some point though, you have to be competive to survive.

I edited the title of this thread, as it was highly misleading.

Ralph — (strange first post) if every country would only develop and produce technology for themselves, we would still be excited about VGA resolution in 4 fps.

Thank you Martin for changing my Title, I tried to change it myself too, but it didn't work. I just wonder though, what is the policy on changing the titles. I mean I apologized for mine, because 2 people said it was misleading, but I see a different TITLE, where probably 15 people thought it was misleading, but that Title is not changed. I hope this does not sound rood or anything like that, just curios.

If you are referring to the Scarlet thread, then in its defense I must say that it clearly says "BTS", i.e. Behind the Scenes in the title, so in that regard it might be unfortunate but not misleading. If you are referring to a different thread, please let me know and I'll look into it. Us mods are just human beings and we don't read every thread.

If you want to have a title changed, you need to contact one of the moderators (yellow names).

Don't worry, you don't sound rood ;)

Like I said, I wanted to change the title myself. I would not want to mislead anyone. So basically, it is up to your personal decision to decide if the Title was misleading. It's just that I found similar titles, and no one cared. As far as the Scarlet wonder goes, you made the decision that by having BTS after, makes it not misleading. Because many users disagreed, as I read. And that's all fine I just wanted to know, how this works. Now I know it's on a personal decision of a moderator. Thanks for the time to explain Martin.

I was wondering what BTS meant and wondering for many, many posts. Finally, somebody explained it in the thread.

Since many forum members do not have English as a native language, why not write the words "behind the scenes" instead of BTS?

Sorry about this totally off topic comment, but heck, I speak English as a native language, and I wish people would cut down on the use of acronyms in general, esepecially on technical forms, because I don't know what a lot of the more technical acronyms used on this site (and others) necessarily mean. They can be confusing, and while I did know what BTS meant, not everyone knows every acronym, so I try to not use them in an effort to make my language understandable to as many readers as possible.

Regarding Scarlet, I guess we're going to have to wait. Fortunately I have no pressing need for a new camera right now, so I'll be here when it gets here.

Hi everyone,

First post - or in this case, reply ever on REDUSER :)

@Anthony - I'm not sure, but I believe I recently heard on a interview with Ted, that the SSD module would be standard now on the SCARLET and that a SSD-sized CF-module would be inserted into the slot on the SSD-module - like a mini SD card into a standard sized SD card.

...Well I hope that's the case anyway :)

I think what you may have heard is that there might be a CF adaptor that will slide into the SSD module; standard CF, not SD. And there still seems to be a great deal of debate and uncertainty about whether CF or SSD module will be the "standard" inclusion in any Scarlet package. My guess is that decision may not have even been made yet.

Oh, well ... I guess only time will tell :)

...After I posted the reply, I saw mention of this "CF-adapter" that should fit into the SSD-slot from others in another thread (I guess it was speculation only).

It certainly would make a good amount of sense to go this way I think (I don't know if there are any technical restrictions to this sort of design though) and leave the option open for everyone to choose format :)

Keep in mind that we are still talking media that is provided by RED; CF cards or SSDs. I doubt (although I don't know for sure) that there is yet an SD card that can sustain the write speeds necessary to record REDCode RAW so an SD adaptor would be useless.

@Terry - yea, sure, SD is totally out of the question. Never thought for one second that there would ever be an adapter for SD. I just used the mention of the mini-SD to SD as an example of how I speculate they'd (RED) would do this.

It would be quite practical if you'd be on the fly - with just the basic setup, and perhaps would end up in a situation where CF was the only option. You'd just pop in the adapter - with a CF in it of course - and off you'd go :)
