  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IMS news please

Doesn't that suggest that more light gets through the lens than is available?

Fstop is basically the diameter of the aperture in relation to the focal length of the lens.

Note: Above comparison is qualitative; aperture opening (iris) is rarely a perfect circle,
due to the presence of 5-8 blade-like lens diaphragms.

The aperture range of a lens refers to the amount that the lens can open up or close down
to let in more or less light, respectively. Apertures are listed in terms of f-numbers, which
quantitatively describe relative light-gathering area (depicted below).

Note: Above comparison is qualitative; aperture opening (iris) is rarely a perfect circle,
due to the presence of 5-8 blade-like lens diaphragms.
Note that larger aperture openings are defined to have lower f-numbers (often very confusing).
These two terms are often mistakenly interchanged; the rest of this tutorial refers to lenses in
terms of their aperture size. Lenses with larger apertures are also described as being "faster,"
because for a given ISO speed, the shutter speed can be made faster for the same exposure.
Additionally, a smaller aperture means that objects can be in focus over a wider range of distance,
a concept also termed the depth of field.

f-# Corresponding Impact on Other Properties:
Light-Gathering Area
(Aperture Size) Required Shutter Speed Depth of Field
Higher Smaller Slower Wider
Lower Larger Faster Narrower

When one is considering purchasing a lens, specifications ordinarily list the maximum
(and maybe minimum) available apertures. Lenses with a greater range of aperture
settings provide greater artistic flexibility, in terms of both exposure options and depth of field.
The maximum aperture is perhaps the most important lens aperture specification,
which is often listed on the box along with focal length(s)."

interesting solution guys... if the Birger mount does indeed change we will need to approve it again, but it is an interesting idea to nail 2 birds with one stone.

Wow… things are getting wild here… not cool and communicative at all…

lol.. i dont think it gets anymore communicative than that Burger.. unless you would prefer for it to just be a surprise..

Jarred, to be strait forward is fine, but still we want to understand.

I would be kind of you if you could answer this two questions:

“If somebody swaps the nikon mount and the upcoming cannon-mount 20 times, and manages not to damage the camera body, We wonder how this abuse will differ from a one-time installation and deinstallation of the IMS mount?”

AND

“If there is NOTHING P&S can do to make it right, let us know and we'll move on immediately. But if there is a glimmer of hope, we may be able to find a way to get P&S back in the game. What do they have to modify ?”

Thanks a lot

Im trying not to get involved with issues of the various commercial offerings here but what I think is being said is this.

From my perspective id like to use PL, EF, Y/C and possibly other lens mounts. I need to be able to change lenses (and or mounts) easily.

What id like to see in practical terms is the following.

A basic mount that serves to host intermediate mounts, ie PL, EF, FD, Nikon, Y/C, Contax N, Leica, and so on.

It is important for lenses that which have an electronic interface with servo capability and other sensors to utilise these facilities where possible. Its also important that this interfaces to the camera directly.

I hope that some sort of standard can be agreed mechanically and electronically to create such a system.

Surely with the various parties clearly having this sort of expertise and capability that this can be achieved for the benefit of all.

As Jarred has stated, there are also other considerations, for example how the mount transports the heat away from the camera.
Anyway, I would always be careful when changing mounts.

I think Jarred has made it clear that if P+S did comply to REDs request, and send a redesigned mount for approval, then RED would of course re-consider their decision. So - the answer to that question is up to P+S, not Jarred.

Has anyone who emailed P&S received a response of any kind? I haven't.

Would be great if this didn't stall here.

Me too. Be great to get him in on the conversation and get to the bottom of this.

Aki (from P+S) answered my mail and told me he's gonna post on RED's forum before the end of the week.

I cross my fingers :)

Wait and see...
More an IMS customer... that is, if IMS will join Birger as a Birger + IMS solution for RED ONE. If not, no way.

Jarred will always have the last word. He made all this community of customers, as matter of fact. All these 3rd parties or even RED have taken advantage from the original dvxuser.com market.

Ok… I understand a bit more…

Fact is:
- the IMS by P&S has to be changed somehow so that we not lose the warranty for the camera… The question was now how we redusers could help that communication between RED and P&S could start at a better level again.

- Meanwhile Aki Schirmer from P&S responded also to my Email - He says, they will post here in the forum something in the next days… let´s wait and see…

- If Erik could adopt his “smart” part (with all the electronic inside) of his mount to the IMS that would be perfect for a lot of Redusers. So, if Erik now is willing to take a look at the IMS, this can’t mean at the same time that he will risk the RED certificate for his original mount, because he just would look for an alternative way to adopt his developed electronic part. Erik is just listening to what many times has been asked for, here in this Reduser forum. He just did one step to get us closer to what a lot of Redusers are waiting for. So Jarred, that’s why I found your post not that communicative.
Besides of that, we all know P&S has to move somehow… Let’s see what they come up with here in the next days…

True... But I don't expect that much.

If P&S succeed to adapt their mount not to void warranty and all aftersales service from RED it will be far enough!

I hope P&S will post here soon...
