  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IMS news please

can of worms

can of worms

My limited point of view on this:

I think there will be enough users among the 4500+ RED owners, especially those in Europe, who will install the IMS and in the case of a warranty issue/upgrade/or trade-in, they will install the PL mount back, and hope, that RED will not realize it.

Very few will be that open about what they did to their REDs as Sanjin is, for the obvious reasons. I know already some RED owners who have the IMS installed, but they never went public about that.

Jarred stated, that RED can determine, if the mount was replaced by an approved one or not. I wonder how this could be done?
From my very limited engineering understanding, the approved mounts may be using special screws, which remains you can trace back on the original camera body. Further, I assume that RED will know the IMS mount in and out, and will be able to detect the deformations on the body made by the mount. Now P+S will try to make the mount as in-obstructive to the body as possible, while RED will try to make the "detection algorithms" better and better. But if somebody swaps the nikon mount and the upcoming cannon-mount 20 times, and manages not to damage the camera body, I wonder how this abuse will differ from a one-time installation and deinstallation of the IMS mount?
Jarred also hinted at possible heat issues and changes to the i/o lens cables, which would make the IMS dangerous to the body. So one way to detect the IMS could be measuring the amount heat damage inside the body, which should be greater than, when one is using the approved mounts. Can anyone with a better engineering understanding explain me how this actually could be accomplished in practice?

This brings me to the can of worms. Let's say, there will be 400 RED users out of the 4500+, that will want to take advantage of the IMS mount (or any other unapproved mount), and they go for it, and void the warranty. (I guess, that Sanjin will report any problem with the IMS mount instantly, but so far he has only good things to report).
Those all will eventually have either warranty issues, or will want a new RED hardware upgrade, or will want trade in for an epic. This means 400 cases, where RED has to prove, that there was an "illegal" modification done on the camera on the one side, and 400 customers, who claim they did not modify at all, trying to "screw" the company, in order to get the goodies, which the other "non-brave" customers got (audio board upgrade/epic trade-in value).

I believe that people will try to do it, as there is a lot of money at stake, no matter how high they think of RED. And this will create bad blood, because there will be people, who will "get through" with the upgrade of their modded REDs, are people that will "get caught". Emotions will boil up (as they are on far less important issues already) and frustrated users will blow off the steam. It seems, that no matter how one look at it, it will hurt the reputation of RED, that will be paying for its gratitude and fair treatment if its customers.

I wonder if there is another way for RED, than either to overlook the mods, when they come in for their upgrades/trade-ins, or to really make an official deal with P+S (which seems to be the best IMS on the market and the one, that will be mostly considered) ?
Because, in the end of the day, I think, that users will knock at RED's door, and not of the one of P+S.

at home.. there's a name for it.. ehehehehe

Red won't wish to play the part of fools. It's better a good solution for both parties.

6 e-mails so far. Thanks.

I would not recommend trying to screw RED.

Besides from this being morally wrong, I would imagine that with a couple of thousand cameras out in the wild, they would now quite clearly the signs of different mounts having been used or not. This is not a solution.

If you have enough money, you can either live with voiding pretty much everything, or you can buy PL glass. The rest of us has to use Nikon for now, and urge P+S to rethink their policy. info@pstechnik.de

I sent off an email to P+S, hopefully it will be read. I'm not requesting that they find a way to securely tuck the i-cable away as Birger has. I want them to USE IT! How cool would it be that when I place a PL mount insert for the IMS mount, I would have my /i data contacts? What's more, I would think an encoder / converter could be embedded in Nikon and Canon mounts so that lens data from other capable lenses could be channeled into the RED in the form of /i metadata.

...Maybe I'm off base though.

I am interested in the IMS mount, but I will not buy it until the warranty, support and upgrade issues are resolved.

I agree !

Yeah... That's a cool idea !!!

Birger makes a great solution

Never seen it working... and i'm really waiting to see if one can really pull focus using the internal motor of a still lens.
The general idea is brilliant.

To make IMS with i/data contacts would blow IMS package price.

That should be possible but then IMS PL mount would costs minimum 4x more.

Sanjin,

The back of the IMS adapter looks like a PL mount. Is it? Can you put an IMS adapter in the Red PL mount? I know the backfocus would be wrong.

Can someone make an adapter for red that uses the Red backfocus ring and is short enough to use IMS adapters?

There is a large spacer behind the Red PL adapter. Remove that, make the thinnest mount possible, and adjust the backfocus to its closest point. Will it be enough for the IMS adapters?

Thanks,
Dusty

Yes, it would raise the price of the system. But I don't think it would be significant and it seems like this is something that should have been planned for from the start. I'm puzzled as to why Birger and P+S have chosen to simply cast this ability to the side. Price would most likely go up some, but I wouldn't expect the increase on the base mount system to be that significant and there's a lot of potential capability to gain.

That should be possible but then IMS PL mount would costs minimum 4x more.

I disagree. On the inside of the IMS mount collar, there would be contacts for the i data cable. On the PL mount insert, there would be corresponding contacts that lead to standard /i pin connectors on the face of the mount. If adding a total of 6 connectors and internal connecting wires to a piece of machined aluminum or stainless steel causes a 4X price increase, then they need to re-examine their manufacturing.

Where we would see the most significant price increase would be mounts that have translating encoder chips inside them. But this is where the IMS mount could be really worth its weight in gold too... What if they were to offer "smart" mount inserts that could talk to the connected lens type (Canon, Nikon, or PL with ARRI LDS) and convert that data into /i compatible format for ingest into the RED? I'd buy it.

Anyway, nice Pics, Sanjin. I admire your bravery for being on of the first IMS mount on RED pioneers. :red_bandana:

Technically speaking the back of each IMS mount adapter is a "positive lock" mount part the same as in every

Arri PL mount part that is attached on any PL lens.

Also I can attacch any IMS adapter mount in the IMS PL mount that is ARRI PL based, the same as in RED PL mount.

The main question about this type of adapter like an IMS is how many registers (= distance flange to sensor plane)

be possible to include in that sort of design that do not heart a front of RED camera (heat and electronics issues).

P+S Technik claims on the web page that:

"The thermically characteristics of the RED One front will stay the same after this IMS modification. ".LINK>>>.

So I'm not a mechanical engineer at P+S Technik or a RED camera designer and I do not know the exact issues.

I do know as an average RED user that the front of RED camera has a heat issue.

Longer you leave the camera on the front heat is "transferring" to other parts of

the body and of course any type of lens mount is affected the first because it is

a closest mechanical part to the sensor.

Yes, it would raise the price of the system. But I don't think it would be significant and it seems like this is something that should have been planned for from the start. Thanks Jeff,

Anyway I told to the P+S Technik's main guys Alfred Piffl and Andreas Dasser about the i/cable fact at our first meeting at Aprill 2008 in Ottobrunn / München.

I'm puzzled as to why Birger and P+S have chosen to simply cast this ability to the side.

We did not cast this to the side. When we had to freeze the design of the mount, the /i pins were not yet enabled in the camera. We were asked by RED not to connect to the /i cable. If I recall correctly, Stuart said don't hold up release of the product waiting for this to be finalized. The /i pins are now going into the camera, so this will be looked at again. There is an extra unused serial port in the mount for a reason... maybe this was the reason?

Nope.. Birger mount originally had issues, but we worked with Eric and the Birger mount now is approved by RED. You obviously will need to send the camera back though with the RED PL mount attached, for both the Audio board upgrade plan and the Trade in Program.

I think Jarred's post is an indication that we are playing ball. This is only one of many reasons that I think the warranty issue was finally resolved. One of the most significant reasons, this was important to the customer. I think ingestion of lens data is going to be seen as equally, if not more important than the mount itself.

What if they were to offer "smart" mount inserts that could talk to the connected lens type (Canon, Nikon, or PL with ARRI LDS) and convert that data into /i compatible format for ingest into the RED?

This is exactly what we have been talking about since day one. The question for now, is where the data will go into the camera. /i cable is one place. AUX232 is another, but the 12 pin LEMOs are rather expensive.

What we are presently shipping is the starting point.

Erik thanks for your knowledgeable contribution here at this tread.

I do have one more idea about all that issues with i/cable and the third party mounts.

RED could "split" the cameras in two parts/types>>>

First: one part would be RED cameras that exclusively has

i/cable enabled and it is for people who want to use Cooke/i Technology supported lenses:

- Cooke S4/i Prime Lenses
- Cooke S4/i 15-40mm CXX T2.0 Zoom
- NEW! Cooke RED Set
- RED 18-50mm Zoom
- RED 50-150mm Zoom

Second: another part of RED cameras that it's respectable owners can choose

between original RED PL mount and the third party mounts like a Birger, IMS bunch of mounts, upcoming Alesniak EF mount, upcoming ET EF/DX mount, etc...

One more thing about Birger mount:

For Birger mount could be the best to get IMS "positive lock" back and take a part of the IMS mount options.

Why?

The first: It would be not need to instal/re-install Birger mount when you want to have for example PL mount.

The second: It would "cut" a couple of degrees of heat because there is no need that Birger mount "lays" on the heated front part of the camera like it is today.

Of course the heat would come anyway but only via "Positive lock" part of the IMS base mount and it would be much less.

Sorry for my bad English, sometimes is bloody awful.
