  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IMS Camera Mount for RED One

Seems like a killer deal to me!! I am going to look into this is a huge way.

Sadly, if I get this, then I won't be doing the Birger

Jay

Jay A., P+S Technik will have a look at Birger mount to put it in a sort of adapter shell (they already have Canon EF dumb mount for IMS) that means it could be possible to work with IMS too.

Thanks Sanjin!
I will checkout the whole thing on monday.
Just a little question: do you know the delivery expectation? Are the mounts ready to ship?

Elcurado, I think P+S Technik first have to sent IMS to RED to test the mount and after that in about week or two they should start to ship. But don't take me serious because I don't work for P+S Technik and don't have exact info about all thing. I'm volunteer here in the case of IMS because first I've got an idea, P+S Technik reacted very fast or in time and now we are almost there at the point to get it.

im gonna wait for birger. Wireless knob, IS.
i went ahead and ordered the nikon mount from red, something to keep me from bitching until things sort out.

I also ordered Birger in November 2007. For me it makes sense if it could work with IMS too.

Actually somebody influential on another cine board said that "It's the package that costs the money,..."
and with IMS and also Birger on IMS for RED you get a high quality still lenses at budget prices.
Then you can also use a lightweight fluid head and tripod with budget prices.
All that corresponds well with a budget camera body price that RED already offered.

This could be a really a budget cine-package revolution.

Sanjin,

Thanks again for all your efforts on this. Your diligence has benefitted many, including myself.

I'm going to wait until I know that the IMS will work with the Birger before ordering the IMS.

For me, the prospect of autofocus or some sort of advanced focus "assist" is just too tempting for me.

I dealt with this issue over last weekend... I was shooting a pro BMX rider in a skate park. He just moved too fast to get acurate focus on his entire line... so I ended up with some parts in focus and some parts out of focus. Fortunately, it looked "artistic", like the focusing in docs.

So, Birger is my first choice, then all other lens mounts and accesories will be purchased accordingly. I may still end up with both eventually, even if they're not compatible with each other.

At any rate, thanks!

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for this to happen.

In fact, P+S Technik has known about us since 2005, when one of our customers put a Birger mount on a Pro35. We asked for drawings to support this effort, and they blew us off. That was the last communication between our companies.

They have not approached us since that time to discuss incorporating our mounts with their system. I suspect there will be some serious mechanical issues that would need to be resolved.

communication...

communication...

I’m sure a lot of REDusers would find it quite interesting to use both mounts in combination…

Interesting information…

here we go… the modular design brings so many good chances with it, but all the involved companies have to cooperate, at least some how at some critical points … That’s seems not always that easy because every engineer and company has there own interest in there inventions…
If they just could see that if they worked somehow together, they could benefit even more… but therefore communication is necessary…
Who is doing the first step?… Why should I try again? Why the big company should treat the smaller company with respect? and so on…

and of cause money questions…

It has been said before: RED should now come in and for the benefit of all should bring things together… it is all there… Make it happen: Offer the IMS with the birger mount at the RED store like you offer products of ET. On the other side, Briger and P+S shouldn’t speculate to high…

By the way: Are people form P+S Technik reading this forum? Now, it would be a good time to step forward and say hello… but maybe it is not in your culture to do that… (it is time than to learn from RED)

Let's count.

Only about 30% to 40% REDUsers are rental companies or individuals with a full or just a couple of PL lenses.

60% or even 70% RED users don't have any or just a couple of PL lenses.

That could be a major market for IMS and Birger mounts on RED.

So for all sides that one is RED customers and other are P+S Technik GmbH and Birger Engineering is to have option that both mounts can work together like a one.

Now I am with a great hope that those 3rd party companies could work together on this common REDUser interest and benefit.

If we would get IMS and Birger together to work as a one mount than a value of RED camera package will be very high on the market.

I think the main thing is that the IMS from what I understand is basically a PL type mount that holds all of the other mounts. Being a 2 piece system there is a limit to how much space you have. It is easy to make physical "dumb" mounts because most of them are just a sliver - but with EF you only have 44mm to the sensor to begin with and then you have to fit the contacts and electronics in their as well.

One thing that I forgot to mention in my discussion in the other thread about the comparison between mounting the Birger and the RED nikon is that in some ways going from RED PL to Birger is easier than going from RED PL to RED NIKON in that Birger mount has its own backfocus adjustment so you can remove the RED PL, not change the backfocus setting, switch to Birger and then go back to PL and the PL should still be set. When you go from RED PL to RED NIKON or vice versa you have to reset the backfocus every time.

Another BTW is that removing the inner part of the PL is very easy - once you get past the PL portion, which you have to remove for either RED NIKON or Birger - it's just 4 screws. (Either way you have to handle the i/data wire.)

In essence then with the combination of RED PL (which you get for free - sort of) and the Birger mount you get PL & Canon EF with relatively easy swap - and then with a $20 adapter on Birger you can have dumb mounts for Nikon; Leica R; Leica/Pentax M42; Contax/Yashica Zeiss (most of which are the same as the Zeiss ZF lenses; and probably Minolta/Sony; etc.

Keith Morris (KM9000) shot his whole movie using the C/Y Zeiss lenses, in "dumb" mode on a Birger mount a couple of months ago.

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15624

And AFAIK with the PL mount I think you can use bayonet lenses with a PL adapter that is probably as solid as the P+S.

I'm not knocking P+S if you intend to use all manual lenses - it just seems that with the RED PL and the Birger plus a couple of adapters you get virtually everything you are likely to use or need anyway - plus of course the best thing: which is use of Canon EF lenses, with basically a free follow focus and remote control AND Image Stabilization, which isn't available on any of the other alternatives.

I do have all available mounts for RED in order.

- IMS

- Birger EF

- Nikon G to Canon EF adaptor from www.16-9.net

Also all available adapters for Canon EF mount.

Than I do have a wide range of Nikon MF, AF, G, Canon EF, Sigma AF, EF,

Leica R&M, Zeiss M42, Zeiss Contax, Zeisss Hasselblad, Schneider-Kreuznach M42, etc.,...

also a couple of PL lenses.

Simply I would like that all that complete lens set could be easy and fast swappable on RED.

Thanks for explaining

IMS seems not basically a PL type mount… IMS seems to be a "neutral" mount to what you can also mount a PL mount …

If you have a interchangeable mount system where you can place a lens 44mm away from the sensor and if you have in your other hand the working electronics for focus and Iris control of EF Canon lenses, it is “just” coming down to the question: “Where to put the electronics?”
I’m not at all a technician but I can imagine if you design a mount that you will find a place (I admit so; it has to look different than the Birger mount right now)
Saying this - all might be to complicated to achieve for the use for the RED ONE. Don’t know...

It would be just so much cooler not having to use the screwdriver again and again…

Obviously it is not an Arri PL, I said it is a PL type i.e. the base part holds all of the adapters in a PL - "positive lock" style receptacle. The point is it is two pieces - the base portion is in the place where the electronics need to be for a smart mount like the birger. Maybe it can be made to work, but it is doubtful because of physical limitations.

Now, it is said that in the future there would be a PL Optical Viewfinder for the IMS RED mount. If this is physically possible, it should be also physically possible to build a IMS - EF Cannon mount where you fit in the electronics.
I believe the difficult part for such a smart mount is to develop the electronics… Erik did it.

can't wait to hear users feedback on this one...seems for me the way to go...since I have plenty of nikons and will have occasionaly access to pl lenses...

I'm just about to wire the money to P+S Technik tomorrow.

Delivery time is approximately from the next week to the end of July.

I'll post the first test results at the second part of August when I planned one shooting test at

Großglockner (also Grossglockner) that is, at 3,798 m above sea level, Austria's highest mountain.
