  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Improving the reduser S/N

I like this idea a lot. I am spending LESS time here because it takes MORE time to get to the good stuff.

Exactly... spending more time and getting less out of it myself.

Though somehow I don't think it should change how we mess around, cause it is nice in here... hopefully we can help it while keeping it friendly and relaxed? I really would like being able to give a 5-star rating to the good posts with lots of meat and hopefully other will too. Instead, now I find myself jumping from page to page skipping posts, looking for familiar user names, and that isn't very useful most the time.
 
I'm 100% into that! I too have been coming on to reduser less over the past few months as the good stuff gets more diluted. I really like the idea of a RECON/ sub section of the site that's entirely moderated.

There is something to be said about noise... it gives a bit of soul. There are many places online that have very little noise, but to me, they are rather Dry.

We just need to find the happy balance... noise level is high, but alot of that comes from the passion.

True dat... that's why I love DVXuser. I am sure once we get our Scarlets and Epics we'll be busier and we'll have less time to post... plus less speculation.
 
I agree Jarred, a little passionate noise is what helps characterize RedUser...I have friends in the industry who pop in here every so often and they say to me "Reduser is quite a unique community isn't, people genuinely care about one another?" YEs, I say...well not everyone but this is not a Utopia, that would not be any fun now would it!

I second a rating system Shawn, this thread is at least 3 stars out of 5 already. :) Maybe even a category where people can rank the best footage they have seen that week vs the best topics discussed. Who knows...have a good holiday guys and gals,

A couple of problems with this...

1st, the forum software will only do what it will do. Adding ratings to individual posts in a thread could be very cool, but the software package the wizards at Red chose to purchase/license and deploy has to support it.

2nd, How many users would actually do it? Most of us focus on the thread's content, getting enough people into a habit of 'shifting gears' to stop and add a rating to a post sounds good on the surface, but in practice I think it would go as an unused feature. It makes your search result dependent on the habits of others, and new posts would inherently be omitted.

Stepping back from it a bit I think a better solution would be to implement a better Advanced Search feature with the ability to put a long list of users to filter the results through. That way the user can maintain a list of users they know to be knowledgible in a text document that they can paste into the "User Names" field. It's proactive at the point of searching and not dependent on others to be proactive when reading posts.

But it is also dependent on what the forum software can do...

Ratings would work if it was as easy as say clicking 1 to 5 stars on the good or bad post itself, but yes new posts would rate low. But if you were following a favourite thread anyway where you might be actively looking for new posts, that won't matter. Old and New users would have to be encouraged to rate.

Better search with a ratings level filter is the best of both systems.

Hey Jared, I just wanted to say that personally I am very grateful for DVXuser and Reduser. I can only imagine how busy Jim has you, and how much stuff there is to do over at Red HQ. I am only glad that you still put so much effort into the forums.

Thanks guys.. im doing what i can. I just added the google powered site search in the search options and added the Dig/Delicious/Stumbled links for submitting threads to the top of a thread.

I will get to this voting thing next.. its a good idea, but its really not as simple as it sounds.. it goes pretty deep.

Thats great Jarred , make sure you get a slice of that google pie... i heard you can get paid 5 cents a hit or somthing like that from people using the google search directed from your website or any google advertizing - hmmmm ....maybe somthing i should look into :mail1:
