  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Importing R3d Into FCPX as RWG/Log film

A quick follow on here...

It used to be that you had to save an RMD in REDCine-X first if you wanted to go back and forth from FCPX to RCX. In other words, if you ingested into FCPX and changed any RED parameters there first, those changes wouldn't be reflected if you went back to RCX.

My question - is that still the case or can you now go back and forth starting in either app?

Thanks.

Does anyone already have an answer on Terry's question by any chance? Do you still have to FIRST go trough RCX, or can you just import straight into FCPX (of course with media not being copied to the library) and be safe to adjust RDM's later?

You can import straight into FCPX, but...Don't let your muscle memory fool you. Everywhere else in FCPX, if you make a change, it's made. In the RED RAW Settings dialog box, you have to make your changes AND THEN APPLY THEM. I think Apple's reason for having this extra step is that it forces FCPX to re-render all the cached/optimized media, and it doesn't want to blow away those files just because you want to twiddle some knobs and then decide to make no changes. However, as I learned last night, it is way too easy to think you've done what you're supposed to do, dismiss the dialog box, and be left with wrong settings. Working on top of wrong assumptions leads to disaster...

Thanks, Michael. Yes, I knew about those applying, which is indeed a good safe-guard if you made Optimized or Proxy media, and the extra warning you get. I can imagine it also having it's disadvantages though.
So, just to make sure we are on the same page: if you import in FCPX, and applying certain settings to the R3D in FCPX, they will show up in other programs as well?
Regards,

I just always one light in RCX and I don't use LUTS in fcpx because I don't finish there. I always render proxy media as well as on longer form projects I just think it makes for a smoother experience.

I think that once you affect the change to the r3d you have to do it in FCP X from that point on as I am not sure that FCPX is reading the RMD, but it is simple enough to check on a few short clips to test the behavior.

Just make changes and rerender in FCP and then look at the same clip RCX to see if the RMD file has been altered. Make some changes in RCX and see if a rerender in FCP X renders the changes.

Do you have a backup of your system prior to the upgrade that you can restore?

check my post guys..today I have dine an updated on Sierra and I cant read anymore R3D!

I'm running Sierra 10.2.2 and it works fine. Make sure you have the latest Apple Workflow software installed from red.com download site.

Regards,

Come to think of it, I'm not sure whether FCPX actually writes out to the RMD files, or if it just stores the metadata for itself. Everything else about FCPX seems to be about keeping everything as internal and opaque as possible, so I would not be surprised that it doesn't touch any external metadata. It just builds its own happy little reality, and you can be happy, too. If you never have to leave it. What David said about one-lighting in RCPX and not finishing in FCPX doesn't contradict what I said: you edit the one-light, you don't touch RMD files, and then you finish the edited master file however you like. With whatever metadata adjustments you want to make to the R3D media and/or RMD files.
