Import and organize for film workflow?

I know FCP7 but scared about X.

Anyone mind sharing, how to create a organized project in X before editing?

I'd like to work form an External drive for the entire film.
I need to bring in raw footage and audio.
Sync the footage and Audio (via TC or manually via slate)
Separate the now synced clips into bins by scene (events?)
Edit each scene in it's own sequence (projects?)

No one? So how is everybody organizing within X for a short film workflow?

The main advice I can give you about FCPX, it's a database that does editing and not an editing program that includes a database. Add all your meta-data, tags, log info, notes, etc, before you begin editing and watch demos on youtube if you have any questions about how to do something, the FCPX interface is not overly intuitive to start with. I would also consider separating embedded sound before import, FCPX cannot work with audio/video separately if imported as an embedded single file.

I don't know about the comment related to embedded audio. That's not true. You can easily work with both embedded and separate audio inside FCPX. Here's a quick overview on the post for the film "Focus". At the bottom of the blog post is a link to Mike Matzdorff's workflow book. It's well worth studying for setting up and organizing your post on the film.

I'm in the final stages of finishing a film that was started in FCP X two years ago (producer delays - hence the 2 years). Shot with two RED Ones. That went through a number of big FCP X version changes and has basically come out the other end just fine. So it's quite doable and easier now than it ever was.
