Imax 2k???

[Ben Holmes]

Sorry if this has already been posted, but this is an interesting article about IMAX retrofitting into regular cinemas. They use, er, 2K projectors...

Interesting... We actually had the opposite at our IMAX cinema - they had the IMAX screen with three or four normal cinemas, but eventually IMAX sold the cinema or something and now it's just a normal cinema. They do still use the massive screen, but I think that's just with regular film prints.

Well, They use two 2K projectors that have some kind of sync system that allows for a perceived greater than 2K resolution. They have 2 projectors playing the whole time. I can only assume that they use each projector to alternate left right for 3D which would mean that if 4:4:4 feed to the projectors that it would be a fair amount better than standard 3D we have seen already.

Hmmm. The IMAX theater on 42nd says its IMAX but its actually smaller than some of the regular theaters and felt like a rip off compared to the one on 68th street.

Just a rumour - but I have heard they are developing a "dual 4K" concept that would give an effective 6.5K image. I'll try to dig up the source.
