iMac Flash Storage Question

So I'm getting ready to buy a new iMac, and I'm trying to decide if I should get the 256gb Flash storage or 1 TB Fusion Drive.....If I get the Flash storage I will have to work with a lot of external drives since 256GB is barely any space....This may be a dumb question but I'm wondering will there be any point in having a faster SSD drive if most of my work is done through external Firewire or Thunderbolt drives? Is the SSD drive still faster even when working through slower external drives?

I probably shouldn't answer cause I'm computer illiterate but I think I set my i7 up with 256SSD and I got a 12tb pegasis external drive. After researching a whole lot this seemed like the smart choice. If I'm correct, having the SSD opens your apps up really quick and having everything on an external drive is really good for me as it gets locked in a fireproof safe everyday and night so I feel extra safe of protecting my work ( which is backed up anyway of course)
