  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

im trying to light a person in water from 60ft away, no backlight needed . Ideas?

I dont think i need to state the obvious here, but shooting an owl with car lights is slightly different to shooting with multiple hmi's or otherwise.
Leo this isn't amature hour, regarding your comments about having a proffesional crew. If someone is looking for advice, it doesn't automatically imply they are a half wit without a safe system of work or the appropriate trainning for the task in hand.
Thanks for your concern though, the crew from the bbc had a great laugh reading it.

You've got more than enough opinions to use a joker to light them, I think Leo was implying, that coming here means you are either very stuck with a pro crew, or are working with a small crew with little to no lighting experience.

Hey Joe,

If you got one of these and had it rigged up to a parasail boat, it would be SICK!

You might be able to just use the parasail boat, then film off of that deck too, all depends on where you want the light to key. If just overhead is fine, then your in business on one boat.

I'm a waterskier, so I'll suggest another approach. Shorten the rope, it's done all the time for competition slalom skiing. Then your light, on the boat won't have to go so far, a good skier can cope with the wake, which may be higher nearer to the boat. Most skiers prefer a certain speed but can cope with a faster or slower boat speed within reason, this will also alter the wake. Is the skier on 2 skis or monoskiing? If on two skis, get a pair of jumpskis and boat can go slower. On monoskis a light person, on one of the wider skis, can go slower. My last suggestion in to use not a waterski boat but a wakeboard boat, but without the ballast filled. The tower is likely a good highish place to mount you light.

Now that everyone has given their best offerings, maybe you could oblige us by posting the final lighting package that was used, so that the good knowledge can be spread around.

Great stuff, thanks for the ideas,
Zac c - Joker looks good testing one thursday and... the first one
Nathan- the airstar looks amazing, perhaps on the follow up shoot, with a bigger budget Thanks.
Werner- Absolutely, i was up with the guys this weekend on a scout and everything you mentioned came into the equation.
Vance - thanks have a meeting with lighting tech thursday will see if it suits.
DCC- My bad, should have specified, half day hire and in euro's not dollars (old habbit)
Michael, wise words and definatly will oblige after the shoot, it will be a challange!
Leo- apologies for the hasty reply, very early morning wet day and late evening back from a scout. bit of a hot head at times.
Andrew -let me share a story with you: Two little mice fell into a bucket of cream, the first mouse was so consumed picking apart posts he didn't see the big f#*king ladder the second mouse climed out with.
Thanks for all the replies, will be back after the shoot with the results.
Joe
