  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm so bored...

I had a recent bad experience with a company that did an amazing job at hyping up a new product release; major countdown webpages with the history of the company and its products on each countdown day, and even MORE forum excitement that RedUser (YES, MORE!). Anyways, here's where the company went wrong in my opinion:

1) The hype and the tease from the owner of the company became insane; people literary were out of their minds and couldn't wait for it, creating a purchasing hysteria for this product.
2) The long awaited date arrived only to give us ANOTHER countdown (sort of) of AVAILABILITY.
3) When the 2nd "countdown" arrived 2 months later, all units sold out in less than 5 minutes, even tough the owner in the forum had sated that he thought they had enough inventory for the expected demand; clearly not. The product cost $2200, by the way.

That was APRIL, and I just got mine last week, 7 months later (this company had to make a waiting list after the release fiasco). I had already moved on, so when I got it I turned around and sold it on eBay very quickly (5 hours) for $800 MORE THAN WHAT I PAID FOR), not because I didn't want it anymore (great product), but because the taste in my mouth this whole ordeal had left; know what I mean?

I guess what I'm saying is that people in general are much better equipped to handle a delay up front, rather than to be led into expectations that cannot be met by crazy demand.

This will likely be my first RED purchase, so I truly hope the experience above doesn't get replicated here.

I'm on that list! I may let my option slide once the email arrives. You're right, waiting forever gets old real fast.

I've known for so long (literally years now or at least it feels that way) about the Scarlet and if tonight's news is just hype and no real delivery dates, photos, video, etc, I'm NOT waiting anymore. Unfortunately my budget can only yield a Sony F3 as an alternative. I will then hope to buy RED in the future, but need a cinema camera as of yesterday and don't buy used gear (hence a used RED ONE).

I'm not a religious man, but I'm fuckin' praying on this one.

Since Pro DSLRs shoot at 10 frames a second, you might as well just hold down the shutter. This is basically the same principle. At 24 frames a second 144 frames is only a 6 second film. The speed they are taking photos in the screening room it looks close or less than 10 frames a second. Looks neat though. It would get very expensive to buy photo rolls and splice a film together. Just buy a used Arri S for less than $1000 on ebay and shoot 16 with a better image and 3 real C mount turrent lenses. The images will far surpass what i've seen on this site.

If the lomography offers autoexposure, and one is an amateur they can buy a super 8mm camera which most have auto exposure control and processing is cheap. With the correct exposure and latitude in the scene I've seen Super 8mm look amazing and its cheap. The cameras do the work.

You are 100% correct…(he, he, he)

I am 41 so I come from the non-digital to digital transition… and have published papers on some seminal work on the digital frontier in certain areas…(back in the day)

BUT…

I think the Lomokino is the perfect instrument for anyone who has very arty inclinations but also has a massive fear of failure, and therefore does not want to appear that they tried too hard. I think the Lomokino embodies a sort of tragic charming patheticness all of its own. So it shoots 3 fps (he, he) so I guess that 48 seconds of “footage” (all three feet of it).

I think my interest was for my nine year old daughter and thirteen year old son. I think they will be the last generation to get their hands on anything mechanical ever again. After their generation everything is going to be almost completely solid state.

Now if I went out and bought a lovely Arri-S the people close to me would get very worried. Uh ohh Eric thinks he is a cinematographer… I/we are doing very cutting edge stuff in s-3d/vr that is relevant to VFX, optical effects and second unit type of stuff…and I have good eye BUT I don’t have any artistic cinematic ambitions (he, he) PURELY technical.

Thanks for the recommendation (I liked what you said).

Cheers,
Eric

P.S> what is the median age on REDUSER? I am 41. (That will kill some time in a harmless way?)

Yeah, I gotcha Eric , as long as people don't take that thing too seriously. I think you hit the nail on the head with "sort of tragic charming patheticness". Love that term. Those lomography shots do look okay and have an semi artistic flair, but basically all look like over processed amateur/vintage imperfection.

BTW, I'm 36 and unfortunately getting older by the minute waiting for Scarlet.

OK, I've had a gallon of coffee and my heart thinks it's a forty year old again: Bring - It - On - Baby. ( :

Quick sugestion. Scarlet 3k. With a module on the back that exports native Avid codec files, recorded on a separate SSD. Flip a switch and it records ProRes.
Ah hell...make it 4k.

The cinematographers out there will be glad to know they don't need lights anymore to film with the new C300... "Felix and Vincent echo what the others said, namely that external lights are unneeded when filming with the C300."
