I'm shooting with the RED ONE and going direct to the final product, a DVD. We never see a foot of film, yet we're calling ourselves, "filmmakers", this doesn't seem right. Who are we?

Movie-makers?

Graeme

if you really want to get technical people who shoot on film are not filmmakers either - the real filmmakers are Kodak and Fuji etc. ;)

You're a Redhead, George.

Let your ginger freak flag fly.

Like many words in the English language, "filmmaker" has evolved past its literal meaning. Filmmaker as it stands today simply means people involved in making motion pictures - whether it be shot on film, digital, CGI or animation. Several formal definitions still equate filmmaker with the director or producer, while others consider cameramen, editors, actors, etc. under the broad term of "filmmaker".

I suppose the most neutral and accurate term is - "Motion picture director" or colloquially "Movie director"?

Come to think about it, I've never seen a "producer" actually produce anything.

We are the Jedi Knights of in a world of mass communications...

You shoot moving picture content... (like all of us) ...
the word "FILM" is meant for two things... FILM the emolsion... , Film that runs through the gate of a Project... Feature film...(which go to DVD) shot film... TVC film... documentary film.. (which go to DVD)

All of these presentation formats could have been shot on anyone thing... from super 8mm through to a RED EPIC .

Film maker is fine :)))

I have settled on either:

Camera Operator (CamOp)

or

Shooter

But those fit my current and near term skills and aspirations. I am actually a little freaked by the term "DP". I know and deeply respect those that are real DPs.... But I was just at an SOC event and one of the members pointed out how every kid with a Canon calls himself a "DP", but most if you ask what DoF is.... Hmmm, Ahh... well. And out of respect for those that do truly qualify... I avoid the term in reference to myself :-)

YMMV

But I LOVE: "Omniographer" :-)

If what you call yourself or who others say that you are doesn't seem right, you do exactly what you're doing and question it. Only you can answer that question for you, and only we can answer that question for us.

Me, I say we're unique - if you want a label.
