  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Generally, I think of myself as not being too daft, but in this instance, I may be:

I've played with the menus pretty extensively and I can't seems to get the Look Around area to show up on my touch screen or EVF. The overlay menu states clearly that the Look Around can't be turned off, but I can't seem to turn it on. I've tried various % of brightness and various colors at various resolutions, with no luck. I can see the grid and center overlays with no problem. I consulted the Ops Guide and it makes it seem like this should be obvious enough, but I'm not getting anything. Am I missing something obvious?

Build 2.0.8

Thanks!

Hiya Frazer,

What format are you looking at right now? I may be wrong but I dont think you'll see look around in 5K FF. You should see it in 4KHD though.

I believe look around was turned off to enable high frame rates. Perhaps an option can eventually be added to turn it on if high frame rates are not needed. It bothers me.

Hmmmm... I was wondering if I was the only one that couldn't figure out how the heck to activate/find/use look-around....

Thanks everyone for your responses.

This is, indeed, a mysterious leap backwards for RED. To me, one of the most revolutionary things about the RED One was for an electronic camera to provide a look around area. Lack of look around had a lot to do with why I have always found video cameras to be an affront to me, as an operator. And now we're back to a extremely crippled look around?

PLEASE RED, PLEASE FIX THIS! You can't let the Epic fall behind the RED One is such a critical user related area.

So what I've now found is top/bottom look around in 5K 2:1, which is very thin, probably not much more than 3% frame height on each of top and bottom. And in 5K anamorphic, there is look around on the sides. I suppose that, in many instances, the extra width of the frame, when shooting for 16:9 can be considered look around, too, but it would be great if it could be greyed.

5K full frame presents the full sensor area, so there is no look around possible in this mode.

5K ANA is also full height, so there is no vertical look around possible in this mode.

5K 2:1 has very limited look around as well since what you are seeing height wise is also the full sensor area

Anytime there is vertical look around added, there will be a frame-rate hit. We are continuing to investigate better ways to provide more look-around options though.

Thanks for the precisions...

But why not having any look around in 2.40 5k when your frame is the same horizontally as the 2:1 5k format?

We should have more look around than in 2:1... Mainly shooting @ 25P here.

Shooting 5K WS gives you the highest frame-rate of the 5K modes. If you are only shooting 25p, it is possible to extract the same 5K WS frame out of the full 5K format (or 2:1 format) using guides to gauge your your look-around.

Personally, I'd happily trade 25% of the frame rate for 25% Look Around. Currently, Look Around can't be turned off, but if it could, then higher frame rates could be the trade off. I still shoot lots of 3K and 4KHD, and there are plenty of spare pixels for Look Around for those.

I understand what you're saying about framerates and that's a valid point. But then maybe you could make it work this way at least when shooting 4K or less :
- If you're shooting at normal framerates (24, 25, 30, and higher, as high as technically possible), then the look-around is automatically activated
- If you switch to higher framerates that couldn't be done with a look-around, you automatically turn the look-around off until the user gets back to lower framerates. Similar to what you do with the RC compression : when you want to shoot at the highest available framerates, you get a message telling you that the camera will automatically switch to a higher compression like 10:1...

I agree that the look-around was a major feature of the Red One, and it's a pitty to loose it at least when shooting 4K or less, or 5K WS (on the top and bottom).

I have no look-around in any mode but 5K Ana and 5K 2:1.

As Nils suggests, please turn on look-around for lower (normal) framerates. I have no problem with losing them in higher framerates.
Thanks!

I will actually shoot 2:1 and extract the 2.40 from there to have a decent look around. But it would be cool to skip the extra data amount while shooting the final 2.4 format...

PS: I'm sure you have allready worked on all those topics, just a question of time to be implemented... ;-)
