If you had to pick 2 ND grads what would they be? I'm buying a bunch of filters right now and don't have the budget to go crazy. I was thinking of .6 and 1.2 vertical. Is that a good starting place? Which two do you use the most and why?

I like to have a .3, .6 & .9 available. A 1.2 grad can get a little heavy (4 stops). You will have to decide between soft edge grads & hard edge grads. The soft edge grads are easily blended and look very natural while the hard edge tend to look more deliberate and stylized. It is good to have both at your disposal and make a decision in the field. Also, make sure if you plan to use them with wide lenses that you get the appropriate size filter and matte box to cover the widest field of view. It is nice to have a matte box with a rotating filter tray or two to be able to get them off axis.

A .3 & .6 can be combined to make a .9

I would have to go with Knute Rockne and Condoleezza Rice. I might have added Daniel Eugene Reuttiger, but he seems to have gotten himself into a bit of hot water as of late.

VERY funny, Mark!

.6 soft step for shots with people while a .9 hard step might prove more useful for straight landscapes without people. Vertical for adjustment of course.
