  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If you could afford only one new Zeiss Compact Prime...

You are 100% right... but I already have a D5.

snip..

The CP .2 look nice because they are future proof but why the hell they made them SLOWER!!
Thanks Michael !

No reason you can't use them on 5D - they are full frame lenses.

Nothing is future proof, - what if RED gets their quantity on RPPs up enough to drop the price to say $1800 per lens? No reason they couldn't - Duclos basically remanufactures an 11-16 and pays retail for the base optics and still sells it for $3995. That has to be a lot more expensive thean assembly line work. The cost difference between a good SLR lens and a good (maybe not great) cine lens is primarily volume based. Red has hugely expanded the market for PL mount cine lenses. And what if Canon decides to make a line of cine style lenses for the tens of thousands of vDSLRs they are selling and uses volume to get the price down?

The only future proof is keeping an eye on the trends. Future proof is a combination of what you can afford and what technical and pricing advances are made or likely to be made.

And who said there is no breathing in the CP .2 ? The first version does from what I read.

You are right about that Mike. Pretty much all still lenses, or cine conversions of still lenses (cp.2) will have some breathing to varying degrees. That doesn't make them unusable though. It is just something that needs to be accomodated in shot design. Most breathing problems, even wicked breathing like on older Nikons, can be hidden when combined with camera movement. In -general-, where breathing jumps out is on locked off shots, and then moreso on wide shots vs cu, and then moreso on longer lenses wide-open vs wide lenses.

Breathing test between Zeiss Cine glass and Zeiss ZF:

There is so much change in the frame anyway, I don't think anybody is going to care for the kind of work that I'm going to do.

"I was surprised to find that the SLR lenses were holding their own against the cinema lenses. I would even say that they were out performing the cinema lenses, as the SLR’s felt a little more sharp then the cinema lenses. "

If I remember correctly this test was made with an older version of the standard primes, right?
