  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If not RED Bricks, what then?

My 3 3-year old bricks are beginning to show their age and I have a job coming up where I won't be able to charge during the day, so I'm shopping for additional v-mounts. What is everyone liking lately? I'm trying to get something that'll work with the RED charger without issues. Preferably 140+ Wh.
Thanks!

I'm a big fan of CoreSWX Hypercore series (CoreSWX was previously named Switronix). % on camera, rear readout of renaming runtime/charge time. They're solid feeling and pretty much what I want out of V-Mount bricks...plus they're a reasonable price when gearing up. PAGs and Blueshape are great batteries but when buying multiple, the added cost really shows.

i bought three global media pro batteries for £500 (onnce imported etc ). you get three batteries, each with its own power adapter for charging
I went with the one gmp recommend for red cameras
the batteries are smaller than red bricks .. but you get 3 for less than the price of two red bricks ..it also but means they can fly , and are hence cheaper to buy
having a separate charger for each battery means my charging eggs are not in a single basket
physically , they are very well built and feel better made than red bricks
they have a remaining charge indicator on the side of the batteries
very very happy with gpm batteries .. will never buy a red brick again frankly ..
sick of the red chargers breaking too, and the power pin sockets on the bricks getting chaffed ..

Thanks for the info.
Not to get too granular, but since the hypercore 150's are practically the same cost, is there any daylight between those and the RED bricks?

EDIT:

If you're looking for 140wh+ then either the Hypercore 150 or 190 from Core SWX or the Cine 150 from A/B.

Take a look at the HC9s coming out from Core SWX. I am full Anton Bauer all the way, but got an HC8 last year and have been loving it so far. Also take a look at the 190 they have, too. It splits in half so it's easier to pack & able to take on flights.

Oh wow I didn't realize they were roughly the same cost. I prefer the shape and the LCD on the Hypercores. I also like the D-Tap and USB outs on the batteries.

Bill,

You can also look into having your Red Bricks re celled. This is usually a fraction of the cost of buying new batteries. My Red Bricks are nine years old and are now just beginning to show their age. Assuming you look after your batteries I would expect longer than three years useage?

Thanks Tom,
They're not performing poorly per se, I've just noticed lately that I can't get through a whole day of shooting on these 3.
Re-celling is definitely something I'll consider when it's time.

Brendan,
Any guesstimation on what the 98Wh ones would give me for run time? Epic Dragon on mini-mags and a 5.0 touch display. CoreSWX claims up to 1.5hrs, but that seems optimistic. Any idea?

Sounds accurate. Power-U 190Wh gives me 3 hours on Epic Dragon w/ 5" Touch.

I'm on DSMC2 so it is a tiny bit different but I usually get about 1:05-1:15 out of mine. I think 1:30 is a bit optimistic but on DSMC1 might be close enough. I also have a set of the more basic 98wh from them and they also work well, though they only pass voltage to camera (were originally purchased for v-mount LED panels so I didn't care about that at the time). These are the ones I'm referring to - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...x_XP_L90S_XPL_90S_V_Type_14_4VDC_Lithium.html

That'll work. The extra 2.5-3 hrs over the course of the day will be plenty to augment what I've got.
