I used one on a shoot a month or so ago. Came in handy as a backlight/rim light, but IIRC they've got a built-in battery that runs down pretty quickly. It did come with an AC adapter. Quality of the light was good, but I seem to remember it being a bit off (maybe cooler) than the daylight it was said to be.

Certainly not a bad piece to have in the kit, but don't expect miracles from it.

I think the one we used was sourced from LensRentals.com.

And I think that would be a pretty perfect use for it, Shane. It's definitely a handy piece of gear, I just wish it had a better battery and was $100 or so cheaper.

And replaceable battery's would help a lot, $350 would be a better price. Hopefully the make a version 2 which will be bicolor, cheaper and with replaceable battery's also, then i'm buying one :)

Those seem unrealistically expensive for what they are. I was working on a Finnish feature film last summer and the Gaffer had a badass Ledlenser flashlight (the x21, which outputs up to 1600 lumens and is both dimmable and can be either spot or flood) and he always taped it into an identical product that he used everywhere, except he needed aluminum foil, some frost/diuffusion and gaffertape to create a costum one in a matter of seconds.
So what I was trying to say: find a powerful led flashlight that has an acceptable color palette for you and your camera and use a piece of cardboard pipe, some aluminum foil and some diffusion to make one yourself. It'll be cheaper, more flexible and give you better results. Plus when you don't need it, you have a bigass flashlight for your electric/camera department to find/pack/unpack something.
