I just had my monitor replaced in my mac book pro. It's a 17" 1920x1200 screen. The new screen is overly bright and it looks washed out. I can't get it dark enough in the calibration setup in System preferences and in the expert mode I always generate a weird look although it is dark enough. Is there a software program that i can use to calibrate my screen that is a little easier to use? i can't afford to get a hardware supported option. I just want a screen that looks reasonable. I'm not doing final color mastering here, I just need it in the ballpark.

You can try calibrating via software with Apple's built-in utility. Go to System Preferences --> Displays and click the Color tab. Choose the default display profile and calibrate off of that. It won't be perfect because you'll have to eyeball everything, but it's better than nothing.
