  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IBE Optics?

We had the chance to extensively test the IBE/Schneider lenses with RPP and Zeiss HS.
All lenses were put on a lens projector, shot a testchart full open and tested lensflares and bokeh with bare bulbes, christmas lights and a LED flashlight.

We had very mixed results on all lenses. No "big" winners, but I guess we're ordering 2 sets of RPP.

Just as expected. The RPP's were game changing PL lenses. I love mine and will buy a second set this month.

Can't wait for my 18mm as well.

I have seen the RPP's go toe to toe with MP's, UP's, S4's etc.

I wonder why folks are spending time trying to outdo them. I can't imagine any of these new peripheral sets will sell anywhere near the amount of RPP's.

More people are going to "get used to" the look, feel, pros, cons of the RPP's. This is what folks will standardize on more than all the other small time sets.

Hi,

It would be a sad day if there was only 1 look, I choose lenses based on the project in hand, sharpest is not always best.

Stephen,

I 100% agree but there is only so many looks I am willing to experiment with. I have my pet rentals (S4's and UP's). I also keep a few "fun" lenses around.

However, due to the sheer volume of RPP's around, I think they become an industry standard. Most everyone understands the language of the S4's, Zeiss, etc. I think the same will be true of the RPP's.

The other sets, not as much.

I have already been on a few Jobs (where the client actually cares what gear I use) and when I mentioned the RPP's, they said.... oh, those are great. (even though I know they have probably never seen them LOL).

Hello Lens World out there,

we had a Prototype Set of the IBE / Schneider Kreuznach Cine Xenar Primes for shooting a Feature Film for German Cinema and did some extensive Testing during that shoot and after the shoot was over. We compared them to Ultra Primes, Zeiss Standard, Zeiss HS and RED Pro Primes. We tested a lot of Aspects and Final results we will post soon. Not all was straightly Scientific, but there are some Charts and Objetive Test in it too. For now and for your own subjective judgement i will post these "First Look" 4 K jpgs converted straight from Full Res debayered 4K tiffs, no color Correction Applied.

It includes some Actual Movie Footage Snapshots and one of our Flare / Bokeh Tests made with bulb, Christmas Lights and a Flashlight. Sorry there are no Focal lengths yet for the Footage yet, only the Flare/Bokeh Tests.

While we can't accurately enough judge for Set in Stone Final results things like Test Chart Sharpness, Corner Fall off of Light and Sharpness since we had pretty Basic Prototypes with minor Perfection Shortcomings we can comment on things like Bokeh and Flares.

-Cine Xenar and RED Pro Primes beat every other Lens set when mounted on the RED ONE in things like Center Sharpness and most of the time Overall Contrast. Other sets often had very soft results and lower Contrasts. All of course being caused by the Telecentric Design of both new Sets. ( Theoretical all parallel Light Ray output at the last Lens Element before it hits the LPF and the RED Sensor) Corner Light Falloff was also very good with both Sets

- Cine Xenars have an almost perfect Geometry. Especially the 25 and 35 are well ahead of every other tested Set

- The Cine Xenar Lenses have, spoken subjective, a very pleasing Image and a beautiful Look. The Transition of Focused Areas to the Out of Focus Areas is really soft. Even when stopped down the Bokeh stays really beautiful and pleasing thanks to the 18 Blade Iris.

Here is a lightly Color Graded Shot, 35 mm Cine Xenar, focus is in this Moment on Actors Hand, so you can see Focus Transition:

More results and Footage Screenshots to come...

Hoping for some updates in the next week...before I finally plunk down on a set of RPPs.
I'm sure if there was any news, it would be posted here. But it doesn't hurt to ask one more time!

I received a 4.5K TIFF of an image posted earlier in this thread, and it reinforced my suspicion that these lenses are easily on par with RPPs, and quite possibly superior. Very excited for more information.

Edit: Alex, that package of frame grabs is excellent. VERY pretty flares and bokeh, and the night shots of Berlin are especially tantalizing.

I hope somebody gets a set of these onto a Mysterium-X ASAP.

I wish that I was in a position to release further information. As soon as I am I will post. But I do believe that people here will be very impressed. Not just what is here, but what is coming soon after as well.

T2, btw.

Mitch will there be any significant discloures for the IBE Optics before NAB '10?

Yup.

Excellent! Can't wait...

T2 is just fine. A fraction of a stop difference between these and RPPs is nothing, especially if these ones are even a bit lighter...

Can we conjecture on price before the official announcement or has the price been state already?

I'm not sure, but I think that's one of the details Mitch can't release yet. I'm hoping they'll be somewhere between RPPs and Illuminas. We'll see!

Did RED have an 18mm in the initial set? Is one coming? Others as well?

Stay tuned.
